A friend let me borrow his Nikon D300, however when I try to download the pictures to Photoshop they won't open. Do I need to load the Nikon software to open them??

I'm going to assume you shot raw, which means you don't have the latest updates. Likely your Photoshop version may be too old to accept raws. You will have to find a raw converter and change them into a format your version of Photoshop can open.

This will convert your RAW files to a format that CS2 can read.

CS2 does not have the ACR capabilities to open the newer Raw files. It has nothing to do with you, and everything to do with Adobe no longer supporting anything but the current version of Photoshop.
