I'm still laughing a bit about this.

So, I agreed to purchase a (well) used camera from Yo_Spiff sometime about a week ago.

Naturally, this was more or less in the back of my mind, as work has been grueling for a week or so now.
Before we get to today's story, you should also know that I shop at woot.com way too much, as I probably get an average of six or seven items a month there, which always arrive in very recognizable packaging.

--
So, this morning.. (Yeah, you can probably already see this one coming..)

I hear a knock at the door and go to answer, lo and behold, there's a new package from woot.com on the doorstep. I think to myself, wow, cool, I wasn't expecting a Woot package, I wonder what this is...

So I bring it inside and open the package, inside there is a very excitingly heavy object wrapped in plastic bubble wrap, and a few bits of electronics in a small baggie..
Now, you would think, and no-one would blame you for this, that I should probably have connected the dots right away.. But then, you would be wrong.

So I stared at this for about 30 seconds with, what I'm sure must have been a very puzzled look, before I realized what the heck it was. I of course found this very amusing, how a simple bit of packaging could muck about with my brain so much..

In any case, Yo_Spiff, thanks! And,,, never send me anything in a Woot.com box again! :)

A similar thing happened to me two Christmases ago.

I know in my head that people reuse boxes...heck I do it too, but for some reason it just didn't click when I unwrapped my gift from my brother-in-law and his family.

I tore that paper off and saw the Milwaukee cordless drill kit box and was dumb founded. Mainly because they don't have much money at all and this would be quite an expensive gift from them, but also because I already had a cordless drill. I just sat there looking at it saying things like "totally cool, wow, thanks, why'd you do this, you shouldn't have, etc".

Then I finally opened it up and found out my real gift, a shirt and tie for work (what I actually asked for) lol. They laughed their butts off cause they didn't even mean to trick me, they just got a box from somewhere and used it.

Now every year I am more careful about a reaction until I actually open the box entirely. lol

Funny, I put Christmas gifts in re-used boxes all the time, just to see the reaction! I can't wait until next Christmas when someone opens a Canon 50D... :)

But It was the perfect size and I have dozens of those boxes around my own home! You only noticed the Woot box, but not the return address. That gave me a chuckle.

One nice thing for me is that I live across town from Woot. I often get my order before I get the e-mail notifying me that it has shipped. On the downside, that means I have to pay state sales tax.

That is putting it mildly.

In California, you technically still have to pay -- it's set up as a "sales or use tax" meaning that for out-of-state purchases you are responsible for declaring/paying it yourself. There's a move afoot to make internet vendors collect the tax (I think based on shipping address) instead ...

I keep hearing about that. It's something that will hurt internet retailers and help the local brick and mortar places. From my perspective, the shipping charges often make up for the lack of state sales tax.

I think I might envy you a little :)

At this point I'm just about to earn my purple woot box (50 orders)..

I live in New Hampshire, there is no sales tax on internet sales.

there is no sales tax period...

technically - with anything you purchase ( in many states ) that you didnt pay sales tax for - you are supposed to claim on you annual state tax filing. i think not many actually do.

- I always reuse boxes from expensive items for gifts for cheap items or vice versa - just to see the looks on their faces.

- Sales tax on internet sales is typically charged if the item is shipped within the state and the state has a sales tax. When it is not charged (shipped from one state to another), soup is correct- you are supposed to pay your own state, but that is currently impossible to enforce.

- I am considering this a generic "funny thing happened" thread, so here is my story from this morning:

I had just put RainX on my windshield and I was driving my son to school and it was raining and I wanted to see how good the stuff was, so as the water accumulated on the windshield I glanced at him and thought he might be wondering why I wasn't turning on the wipers (he didn't say anything though), so I said "I am going to see how long I can go without wiping." From the look on his face, he was obviously not even thinking about the windshield.

Is it getting uncomfortable yet?

Yep.. I had to use the stuff on one of the old rods that didn't have functional wipers at the time.. The faster you go the better it works :)

I use Rain-X washer fluid.

Freakin' awesome after you've used it long enough that it "conditions" your windshield.

After all those years of rubbing the concentrate into/onto windshields, I'm thrilled that it works just by using the washers.

Their windshield wipers suck horribly though. Damn things worked great for... two weeks and then did exactly what they weren't supposed to EVER do. Back to Bosch for me...

Regarding funny package deliveries...
I made an order with SteepandCheap, which is sorta like Woot but only for outdoor gear at serious discount for an awesome tent. I was using a horrendous connection to the internet, and things seemed to time out when I placed the actual order. So, knowing that there was only one more available, I hurriedly tried again, thinking I was going to miss this great deal. Well, SteepandCheap has an option where you can have them hang onto the item for a few days in case you get anything else, so that your shipping costs are minimized. I usually use this. So I had my tent waiting to be sent, and I got a couple e-mails, and wrongly believed the two e-mails were for the same order. So a week later, I've been happily tracking my order and know it's supposed to show up. In my area, express shipping shows up separate and before slower packages during the day, so I get my tent, somewhat surprised it came early in the day, but still super happy. So later in the day I'm setting the thing up and checking it out and the doorbell rings, and there's another perfectly identical box sitting on my doorstep. I'm pretty confused, and have to open the thing up to realize it was another of the exact same tent.
What ended up happening is I inadvertantly chose express shipping on the order that was kept longer for other items, whereas on the first one, which I didn't select delayed shipping on, I selected the slowest possible shipping (what I wanted). The fact that they arrived at the same time was just coincidence.
