OK folks, this is extremely off topic for DPC however I am going to call on some of my friends, and heck even my enemies! In the past 1.5 years I've lost three members of my "family" one dear friend and coworker, one Aunt, and one Uncle to Cancer. The newspaper I work for, specifically my Sports editor has been battling Cancer for the past 14 months. Two of the ladies in the newspaper office have started a Relay for life team, which I have joined. I have a personal goal of raising $200 to help the team and I'm going to walk and document the night while we walk. I'm hoping I can get a few donations from DPC members to my personal page by clicking here to donate. I'll bump this thread a few times a week in hopes of reaching my goal. Thanks for helping out if you can. Also if you have a member of your family that has, had, or lost their fight with Cancer please share a story about how cancer has effected your life.

Matt

Edit to add, I owe a lot of my success to DPC but specifically to My sports editor who took a chance on an unknown photographer and gave him a chance to learn and grow as a photographer while having some amazing experiences.

Great post Matt. I don't have the funds right now, but if I scrape up some extra, you will be first on my list. In the last year I have lost 2 dear friends to Cancer. It is a horrible disease and one I would love to see cured. Thanks for doing this.

Marko that gentleman was way too young to leave his family and friends. My friend Gary was in his 40's and was taken very quickly from us, less then 14 months from the time he was diagnosed to the time I helped carry him to his final resting place.

Kari, anything you or anyone can offer, even a dollar would be appreciated. If just 10 percent of the active members on this site each donated a dollar I could easily reach my goal.

' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' MattO,thank you so much for posting this thread! It was very unfortunate that I could not see him before he passed on. :( However I did get a chance to send him a card and flowers. As you might have read, it was a very quick process from when he was diagnosed to when he passed as well. Not much time was given to everyone to be able to see him.

Many people ask me how do I cope with his death, I tell them this... It was a quote he sent my best friend via email about 10 months before he passed... " LOVE LIFE, and always STAY STRONG no matter your circumstance "

Again Thank you for making this thread. :)

Hey Matt....I would absolutely give you my last dollar, if I could afford it. I am 100% for cancer research. Being out of work and essentially having family help me out I can't come out of pocket at all. My oldest brother has non-hopshkins lymphoma (may be spelled wrong) and my dad a few years back had a cancerous tumor in his bladder. The tumor was removed succesfully. Get back with me at a later time and I would be glad to help...

Tuesday evening bump.

one year ago today Gary left us. And last night my editor told me he got the results of his scan, and that his cancer is growing and spreading........not the way I really wanted to start the week.

donation made.

A dear friend of mine passed away at age 42 from a brain cancer.

My father passed away at age 54 from cancer (non-hodgkins, and lung)

My Grandfather passed away at age 90 from lung cancer

My co-worker is now battling the beast himself

Together folks, we CAN make a difference. Please help if you're able.

As you all know I have previously had a close call but won. 7 weeks ago the whole scene was repeated but this time it became a real beast....
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/25000-29999/27812/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_862997.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_portfolio/25000-29999/27812/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_862997.jpg', '/') + 1) . '

The truth is where in the beginning it was said to be not a problem anymore, the beast is gone, turned into another sword over my head. The shear size of the tumor is a potential cause for this cancer to have moved into my lung and liver. I will go for a further CT scan on April 14th. Personally I hope it is clean and can be used for a benchmark over the next 5 years. I will have to be clean for 5 years.... thus no more long term relationships or plans for me, the sword over me demands I put my interests on hold and become the most unselfish person I know.

This cancer is both radiation and chemo resistant and MUST be cut out every time it is observed according to my oncologist.

Now, members of DPC, cancer is not a game, it is hell. It is not that beatable as people want you to believe, look at the suffering and deaths around you. Sure, some beat it, but what percentage? Please support those who tries to collect some money for helping out.

I have a great medical care, the best in South Africa, still the excess payments are killing me. So much more those who are not as privileged needs our help.

I will beat it, I believe it. But it will not be easy. My whole body is ruined with the last op, I can not sleep well and I have lost 15kgs in the 5 weeks since the operation. I have started working 3 weeks after the procedure, slowly, but have already traveled extensively.

The cancer my kill my body, but it will never touch me.

Linda and Kat, thank you both very much for your help.

docpjv I can't imagine what it's personally like to deal with Cancer and have it ravage my body. I can only know what I've seen happen to my friends and relatives, and now to my Editor. I pray that you find a clean scan and can again begin to enjoy life. Prayers are with you.

This is two things, 1) a bump for ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/21.gif', '/') + 1) . ' MattO and 2) a request.

This is the request...

Because the funeral for Tom Conboy (person in the link I posted) is today I would like everyone to just take a minute and pray for not just Tom but also for every person who has lost someone from Cancer. And because I know that not every single person on this site is religious I would like to just ask for a moment of thought from them.

Happy shooting and keep this thread going!!!!

My prayers are for those touched by his death. I think he is in a better place.. no pain, no fears, no tears. For MattO, his colleagues, and the family and friends.... you are in my thoughts.

Done…

Raise your goal and we might give even more!

My wife ' . substr('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31_F.gif', strrpos('//www.dpchallenge.com/images/user_icon/31_F.gif', '/') + 1) . ' puckin and myself are pretty big about giving back. We did not have much of a major connection with cancer when we started Why Pink, but now that we are moving into our 3 year we do. We have met so many great people and heard some amazing stories. We create Why Pink as a way to tie our passion for giving back with our passion for photography. We do it in support of breast health awareness. We take pictures of survivors and supporters and ask that they wear or bring something pink… We use selective desaturation and turn everything else black and white except for the pink items. Over the past 2 years, we have helped raise almost $10,000 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Susan G Komen for the Cure.

Keep doing what you are doing! Check out our sites for more information.

Thank you, you must have replied while I was searching for your Profile. I really appreciate what you are doing and what you have done to help me achieve my goal.

My editor has had a super rough week this week, he was only able to dictate his column to his wife who then drove into the office to type it out for him. He is not giving up, but I can't help but feel that Cancer is going to take another person from my life. Thank you again for your help with not only my personal fund raising, but also what you are doing in Blue Springs, Next time I'm in the area I will stop in and shake your hand.

Bump and since I met my initial goal of $200 I've bumped my goal and want to reach $350 in the next 21 days before the walk. Thank you so much to those that have helped me meet my first goal, and to those that have sent prayers and thoughts to me during this time.

Bump and there is just two more weeks until the walk. I moved my goal and I'm still hoping to reach it.

On a personal note I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with my editor. And I nearly got the sense that he was trying to tell me goodbye. He sort of handed over the sports dept yesterday to the guy who has been helping him. And won't be in the office for quite some time now, I'm suppose to answer to another person now. I'm sort of feeling numb right now. Just wanted to share and bump the thread.
