Looking for people to "mark" their open challenge entries this week as a test to help those who want or do not want commenting on their photos. People complain in every challenge that no one is commenting on their photos and I think this might help those people get more comments. Additionally, it would help voters realize who really wants comments and alleviate the possibility of a bad comment turning into retribution from the submitter. Using a simple code each participant will identify whether or not they want comments, only good comments or no comments at all. Here is the breakdown for the code;

CW...Comments Welcome. Submitter allows all comments to be made without retribution to the commenter, within site guidelines of course.

GCW...Good comments welcome. Submitter wants comments but only positive in nature.

NC...No comments. Submitter wants no comments made.

Using this code, submit your photo and after the title in parenthesis put the code. For instance, "Waiting in Line (AC)". I think using this system will help increase voter comments and reduce any hostility produced when someone gets a negative type comment.

Any takers??

As long as others are in for it, I am.

I actually think an NC "no comments" mark is a good idea. If you can't take the possibility that someone will say something, even constructively critical of your photo then signaling the commentators to pass their (generally much coveted) comments along to someone who actually wants feedback, is a good idea.

As for myself, though, I will treat photos marked GCW in just the same manner as those marked NC. Unless you are interested in honest critique - positive or negative - then I'm not interested in leaving a comment.

Sure, I'll do it, but it could be a touch unfair on those who don't read this thread, they're likely to miss out on comments since commenters will focus on the ones who add the code, unless of course the commenters didn't read the thread too in which case they'll just be confused and leave comments asking what the letters stand for :)

Might take a couple of challenges to catch on, if it does. The amount of people participating will determine if there is any critical mass behind it.

These people should find another hobby or just go do their stuff somewhere else if they can't take a constructive comment from someone who is genuinely trying to help with their comments.

What if I mistakenly comment on an image that is marked as not wanting one? Will I be sent a nasty PM or will the SC ban my arse? ;)

GCW...Good comments welcome. Submitter wants comments but only positive in nature.

I will skip the image and NOT vote on it. If you can't take my comment then you don't deserve my vote.

Makes me laugh out loud at how silly this whole thing is.

The danger with this is: if there's only a few takers, the voting won't be as anonymous...

good Idea already marked my entry. I see no probs in the system its the submitters choice to participate

I like the idea too. I love comments (especially since I am so new). My skin is tough... I can take it... bring it!! LOL

I better keep this key handy during voting. I keep thinking "NC" = Negative Comments.

ps: I like the idea, but this REALLY should be a site feature. A simple checkbox that says comments or not and just disables commenting for those who don't want them. ...where's that dead horse gif.....

Good golly, why are you here if you don't want the full gamut of comments? The whole *** point of submitting and posting is to get feedback. If you want Good Feelies, start your own Good Feelies site. Not to mention the difficulty in determining if a comment is positive or negative criticism.

I will be - I AM - tempted to vote 1's for all NC and GWC, and double 1's for Art.

Agreed, it should be a site feature...

As for the "Good Comments Welcome" idea, for the time being let's agree to only either have comments(CW) or no comments(NC).

I would think that, if they see more and more people making this note on their entry, they will see that there's a need for this checkbox and they might install it.

On the other hand, I think that everyone likes to know the motivation for a given score. Whether it's a low or a high one. Written feedback, even a brief one, always says more than only a number.
I've said it before and I'll repeat it again: make an obligation to comment when a 1-2-3 score is handed out.

I'll add the annotation to my entry, just to see if it does make a difference.

Woohoo! An 11 will surely raise my average! *just so you know which entry is mine, I will annotate the title with (GMAE) in upside-down Aramaic.

I agree. It's been made clear that someone only inviting positive comments might get something they don't want. If you don't want any negative feedback, then just decline comments altogether.

Alternatively, the way Worth1000 does it is with "Please critique my entry" and "Please do not critique my entry".

btw...tried this a few months ago here...it only worked for a "little" while...then when ever we would post something on our pictures...it was to obvious as only a few of us did it...

Can I tag my entry (HVW)? (High votes welcome)

On retrospect, it might be a bad idea. It would stand to reason that you would take more time to look at a shot your commenting on, and less for one you aren't. This would mean people who don't want comments might suffer from people taking less time to properly see their image and it would skew the voting, perhaps only slightly, but I'm pretty sure it would have an impact.

I do understand that the effort put into commenting is best spent on those who want them, but ultimately I think it's more important to keep the voting fair.

I disagree. I know of a number of people who do not comment unless they have something good to say because they have either gotten a nasty PM or don't want to be harsh. I think this would simply encourage people to leave comments that they otherwise might not. I don't think it will change my own commenting habits.

personally, I think we should all go comment on the NC entries.

Well, yes and no. You are referring to the one that goes to the queue for the critique club, not something that displays an "I welcome comments" message.

For those who wish to participate, today is the day to mark your "open" challenge entries for commenting.

Please mark your entries as "(CW)" for comments welcome and "(NC)" for no comments.

This is open for everyone participating in the challenge "Planes, Trains and Automobiles II" and "Stopped Motion V". No one is excluded from this invite...unless of course you are not entering a challenge today. During the challenge please refer anyone asking about the codes to this thread.

Thanks for your participation.

I'm gonna mark mine (CW) for Country and Western and (KLK) for my initials and (USA) for my country and (PGMAT) for Please Give Me A Ten. :)
