I know DPC does a good job of catering for a range of photography and I can see the logic of this following on from the Fine Art challenge; but just by way of a straw poll, who likes shooting for these sorts of challenges (I'd stick the Stock Photo challenges in this category)? Just interested.

Not me! Hate them.

ETA: I don't like shooting them and will most likely not.

Yuck, not me! I do agree that it's a good follow up to the FA challenge though. I really should try and stretch myself and give it a go although i'm sure i'd only mangle my image in a fit of photographic tourettes before submitting like i did with the still life with fruit challenge.

I do (hangs head). I suspect Oliver ( h2 also likes these challenges.

I like to shoot this kind of stuff, It gives me a chance to use all of my studio gear, strobes, light tent etc... From the viewers perspective however, They are kind of Boring!

I do and many others too. Are you trying to change DPC into something that it isn't?

I quite fancy this challenge, I've just started playing a bit more with lighting so it's come at a good time.

How is asking for a straw poll out of curiosity trying to change DPC??!

I think if i had a small studio set up i'd be more interested from a technical learning angle. I may gets some in the future of course and would try more of this type of photography.

It's what you make of it:
Alistair Tutton
Kiyoshi Togashi
Jonathan Knowles

I don't think i'm getting the difference between stock and catalog photography. I should take a photo of some product, like advertising photo...right?

I don't like these challenges. They're depressing.

One of the main differences is you don't need to clone out the logo in product shots as you'd have to for Stock. And a good product shot, if ever accepted, will rarely sell well on Stock; Stock shots usually show generic products in a generic environment (if any) so they can be used by different clients.

Almost. Focus on the product, but make it look special. If you need a tagline for the image, it's advertising, not catalog.

I agree it's a smart follow-up to the Fine Arts challenge. I don't enjoy taking these types of photos, but I think it would be instructive to try.

Is there a distinction between Catalog shots and Advertising magazine shots? For me there's a line. Product Shot can mean both but the description says catalog. Uber super closeups of items might work for advertising as does highly conceptualizing but for catalog you have try to stay true to the item as much as possible so the customer knows what they're getting. There are shots that can fit into both camps though.

Make sure you examine the previous winners. I shot for the last one per the description (A CATALOG) and all the top photos appear to be ADVERTISING images.

Which is fine, if that's what the voters expected. But few of them appear catalog worthy. I won't make that mistake again :)

I did my best to fall right in the middle.. In the end I probably ended up more on the magazine side, but I could still see my image in a catalog, it would just have to be a very fancy catalog :)

A good catalog/product shot is boring. It shows what the product looks like.

An advertising shot is an image that's designed to make you want the product, whether you really need it or not.

Wonder how you can tell that of all those images.

Not necessarily. Maybe you just look into the wrong catalogs.
I've been designing a LOT of catalogs in my lifetime. Rarely the photos inside showed the products only. Most of them were "ambient" shots or still-lifes. Some even were action shots.

So not Ikea, Argos, Tesco, Avon, Littlewoods etc I'm guessing? I've never seen an "ambient action shot" in Argos catalogue... lol

What are they like in America? :p
