Because of the nature of time, the universe is, instant by instant, recreated anew.
Therefore there is in truth no past, only a memory of the past. Blink your eyes and the world you see next did not exist when you closed them.
Therefore the only appropriate state of mind is 'surprise'. The only appropriate state of the heart is joy. The sky you see now , you have never seen before. The perfect moment is now.
Be glad of it.

- Wen the eternally surprised -

Terry Pratchett, 'Thief of Time'.

You're lucky we don't exterminate you.

Another good line from The Godfather:

Clemenza: OK, you shot 'em both, now what do you do?

Michael: Sit down, finish my dinner..............

It's easy to forget that Michael did have a little bit of a sense of humor at one time.

This Life Is A Test
It is only a test.
If this had been an actual life
you would have been given
further instructions about
where to go and what to do.

Don't remember where these 2 are from.

"Hope is not a strategy."

"It's no fun unless you get to break something."

From my 3 year old, who is wiser than his years would suggest, when asked why he did something he wasn't supposed to:

"Because I did it."

or, when asked why he didn't do something he was supposed to:

"Because I didn't."

2 possibilites exist - either we are alone in the universe or we aren't. Both are equally terrifying - unknown

That's close to a quote widely attributed to sci-fi author Arthur C. Clarke, who by the way lives in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He's getting way up in years, hope he survived the disaster.

I saw a report on the news that said he is fine but he cannot locate any of his research staff. Yikes.

For Ever After:

Prince Henry: Do you really think there is only one perfect mate?

Leonardo da Vinci: As a matter of fact, I do.

Prince Henry: Well then how can you be certain to find them? And if you do find them, I mean really the one for you, or do you only think they are, then what happens if the person you're supposed to be with never appears, or she does but you're too distracted to notice?

Leonardo da Vinci: You learn to pay attention.

Prince Henry: And let's say... God pus 2 people on earth and they are lucky enough to find one another, but one of them gets hit by lightening, well then what, is that it? Or perchance you meet someone new and marry all over again, is that the lady you're supposed to be with, or was it the first? And if so, when the 2 of them are walking side by side, were they both the one for you and you just happened to meet the first one first, or was the second one supposed to be first? And is everything chance? Or are some things meant to be?

Leonardo da Vinci: You cannot leave everything to fate boy. She's got a lot to do, sometimes you must give her a hand.

Just found a link to Clarke's web site where he reports his own experience (and that of his staff) and gives his take on the best way for us westerners to help out. Link is here.

"Think for yourself. Question authority.
Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political, the religious, the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their views of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability to inform yourself.
Think for yourself. Question Authority."

A couple of more...

Deadlines? I love deadlines... I love the whooshing sound they make as they go by.

I want to procrastinate, but I keep putting it off.

Sorry, I don't know the authors off hand.

I think these (or slight variations) may appear WAAYYY earlier in this thread.

Someone had a version of the second one in their signature -- that one was by Ellen DeGeneres:
