I was thinking about upgrading from my Nikon D40 to a Canon EOS 50D. For one, I like the idea of wireless remote, does that mean ? Can I be photographing a client, while I have an assistant editing the images while I am still photographing ? It seems like a nice upgrade. Does anyone have one ? Or have had experience with it. I am selling my Nikon D40, and upgrading.

I would seriously recommend that you slow down and learn a little bit about what you are doing before you open a business, switch to a completely different camera format, and hire an assistant to do the editing you should rightly do yourself.

Your questions are becoming increasingly more vague, and difficult to answer considering by your own admission elsewhere, you're new to this.

Just my $0.02, US......YMMV....

Hi April I'm always happy to see a new Canon user but I had to pop in here to say your D40 is a very nice camera. Here at DPC there are 963 owners.
If you go to Equipment/Cameras/Nikon/D40 you'll see the list of those users and some samples of shots taken with your camera.shortcut for you.
Also a search on Google will give you plenty of sites with advice specifically for your Nikon.

stick with Nikon.

A wireless remote is what it sounds like, a wireless remote. You know what a remote control is right? It's one of them... for cameras. You are talking about 'tethered' when your camera is connected to a computer.

Jeez...

There are lots of other options for doing what you seem to be asking without dropping that much on a new body...
Two options that immediately come to mind are shooting tethered or using an Eye-Fi card, and there is also the Nikon wireless remote that can be purchased. I'm not terribly sure what "wireless remote" feature of the 50D you are asking about though- the feature I'm discussing is not specific to just that body- you can do it with tons of different bodies from all the major manufacturers. If I'm understanding your question correctly though, you need to buy a separate piece of equipment anyway (the wireless remote) which can be used with many other bodies.

I'd also second Jeb's concern that you're complicating things behind what you need to. Though there are advantages to shooting tethered/with an eye-fi, there are disadvantages as well. Yes, there are times where a workflow where you capture, edit, and print on-site like that is necessary, but as many other photographers here have pointed out, it isn't an easy thing to just jump into something that fast paced. I'd suggest improving technique to limit as much editing as possible before such extreme, and perhaps unnecessary, steps are undertaken.

:)

Change to Canon!

And I'm curious if you're talking about a wireless remote, or a wireless CF card.. The 802.x wireless CF card can do what you are asking for, but the wireless remote, not so much.

Just get two Nikon D3S's and take the lens catalog into the camera store and tell them, "I'll take one of each."

You'll be all set.

You've already got a fine camera that will do you well. Though an EOS 50D is a higher end camera then a Nikon D40, but it's not that huge a jump. Most of what gets you a great image is you. A better camera will not in and of itself improve your photography. Stick with the D40 for a while.

There is a wireless Sd card, the "Eye-Fi", but I am unaware of a similar model in a Compac Flash version, which is what the 50D uses.

It'll work with the SD to CF adaptors that are available. Alan had one at the DPC NE Strobist GTG. It was COOL!!!

SD WiFi cards and CF adapter info here.

I can see the value in event photography, having the images immediately sent to the PC and having someone editing / preppign / printing them from there while you are still shooting. But you could do that tethered (not sure id D40 has tethered capability. 50D does). Issue with switching brands is usually related to how much you have invested in lenses and also have some specific reason to switch. I'm not hearing one, but hey, it's your money and your decision. Best of luck to you.

I will second (third?) Nikonjeb`s comment regarding you starting a business. Initially I thought it was Jeb just being Jeb, however checking some of your other threads it seems you really are a long way off even considering starting a business (one of your threads is asking for help on learning to use the manual controls).

Y`know I respect anyone trying to better themselves and make something of their lives, but I would say at this stage, just enjoy photography as a hobby - don't view it as a `cushy` job and a way to make a quick buck.

I can only judge your level of competence on the work of yours I can see on this site (one image) and to be honest I really don`t think you are ready to start charging people for your work. But this is my opinion and my opinion isn`t the most highly regarded on DPChallenge so take from it what you will.

However, you have joined this site, you will learn an awesome amount about photography and post-processing on here, so you are getting off on a solid footing.

Edit - unless this is your site (same company name) Memories Forever Photography in which case you will hand my arse to me on a plate. But I am guessing maybe not yours..

Not hers, I don't think - she is in TN and that one is in Fargo, ND - you know, where that pregnant cop caught that guy grinding up Steve Buschemi in that wood chipper. You betcha.

You follow these sort of news reports, don't you?

Hi April,

I have to agree with Simms. What he said may have been hard to hear, but good things take time...you have to put some time into learning photography instead upgrading equipment.

Many people use Betterphoto.com along with poking around here at DPC to improve their skills. Or maybe see if you can find a class at a local community college to get those basics down. The equipment you have is only part of the equation.

: )
