I'm screwed either way. But that hasn't stopped me yet.

Sounds too Gaudi to me :-) I suppose if you were a Hobbit you could get a discount on a ticket to Bilbao...

To my DPC buds in Germany, this would be a great week to visit Darmstadt....

I think I was the one who made this challenge suggestion over a year ago. Now that it's here, I'm drawing a blank for potential subjects.

I was going to mention Düsseldorf, but I figured you and Christiane have that covered!
03/10/2010 10:13:45 AM · #12
Oops - I found some, too :)

Wish I could go to Tokyo again within the week, but that's unlikely. Will have to be inventive and make do with what we have here in this boring city.
The Zeil shopping mall in FRA could be interesting, but not for me this time ...

No, not the Mediaharbor this time, found something else interesting nearby... Hope the weather forecast for the weekend proves wrong :/

You have oodles of Bizarrechitecture out your way. Check out Frank Gehry's work, all over LA; not just the Disney Hall, though that's bizarre for sure, but some of his earlier houses in the beach towns. Seriously. You got some great stuff to work with...

Yeah, but LA isn't exactly do-able for me at the moment. Oh for a car! (Mine was due in today, but I got an email last week that the boat is "delayed due to weather and mechanical difficulties" - no estimate on a new arrival date. I'm just hoping that means it didn't sink!)

Santa Barbara's architecture is gorgeous. However it is not exactly bizarre...

I seem to remember something off-the-wall at the UCSB campus. Let me see if I can dig it up...

I can't remember it anymore... UCSB has a good school of architecture; go there and ask for some help locating "strange" or "vernacular" architecture in the region, explain what the challenge is. I know it exists. I am pretty sure there's some "folk art" houses in the region...

Or I could just go ride through and see what I can see. :-) I do ride through there a lot, but I take an edge route to avoid pedestrians. The engineering building is nice, but normal. I don't recall anything too terribly bizarre but I'll ride through the center next time and take a look.

Head up to the botanic garden, and on your right, about a half mile before the entrance, hidden behind a highish fence is a wooden shoe. That is a house built in the shape of a shoe. Very bizarre. :)

Ha! I was just up at the mission yesterday - I shall head back up that way today and see if I can find the shoe. I have to go find Samy's this morning - a WONDERFUL brick and mortar camera store. I bought an Argus camera at a thrift store a couple weeks ago and need to take film in to see if it actually worked. That, and the camera CAME with slide film in it. I'm dying to see what's on it!

Wish me luck. I have the borrowed Jeep with the frozen center differential. It does OK unless you want to make anything other than wide sweeping turns. And it makes kinda funny noises sometimes, but it runs!

I suspect those of us living on Cape Cod are going to have to take a road trip "off cape" to find bizarre architecture. A great swath of the cape north of route 6 is classified as an historical area with houses very homogeneous in style and the rest of the cape seems to go for the same look too!! Robert (Bear) is suggesting we drive up to Cambridge for some of the MIT buildings. We'll have to see.

You could always head over to Newport, RI. Those houses along the cliffs may not be unusual, but they sure are bizarre. :)

Why couldn't this challenge be in a couple of weeks when I'll be in Richmond? Harrisonburg is the singularly most boring place on the planet.

That's an idea. Thanks! We've just made a list of about half a dozen slightly unusual buildings on the cape to be sure we don't overlook anything that might work closer to home. Probably not bizarre, but at least different from the norm here!!
