Can someone please help me compare lens?
I am so confused on what to get. I have a Nikon D40, and want a 18-200 lens, I was told to get the Nikon lens, but other people are telling me that the Tamron 18-270 is just as good???
Is there somewhere I can go to compare these, and also with the Sigma??

I don't know of any sites that compare the lenses you mention but you can check out PixelPeeper and Pbase to see what others have taken with those lenses.

I don't know if it's possible for you to, but if you have a camera store close to you that supplies all these lenses it would be beneficial to go in and handle them before you buy anything. Each lens has its own feel and weight to it and, similar to holding a camera, you want to make sure you enjoy how it works in your hands.

www.dpreview.com is a very respected site for camera and lens testing/review. They have reviewed both lenses:

//www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/tamron_18-270_3p5-6p3_vc_n15/ for the tamron

//www.dpreview.com/lensreviews/nikon_18-200_3p5-5p6_vr_afs_n15/ for the nikon

Are you in a real hurry for a decision?

Last night I was planning on comparing the D300 and D90 using the Nikon 70-300mm lens and the Tamron 70-300mm lens. I was interested in finding out how each camera match up using the same lenses taking a tripod mounted photo of the same subject at 70mm, 150mm and 300mm. I also thought of including the D3000 as well.

It so happens that we have the Nikon 18-200 and the Tamron 18-250mm, so I could do these two at the same time, if you are interested. It won't be until the weekend tho!

When I broke my Tamron 28-300 (An unpleasant experience dealing with Tamron, BTW.) I got the Nikon 18-200 VR. I feel that it's vastly superior in many ways and it only served to make me resent the money I spent on the Tamron that much more.

I'm not a big third party lens fan.

Also.....make sure that Tamron has an internal focusing motor or it won't autofocus on your D40.

YMMV.....

Just FWIW......it's *always* easier to sell a factory lens down the road than an off brand.

Back with some answers at last. Last weekend was a washout, so I finally got round to doing the tests I spoke about.

Here is the equipment list I used. Nikon D3000, Nikon D90 and Nikon D300 bodies. Nikon 70-300mm f4.5-5.6 VR, Tamron 70-300mm f4-5.6 LD Di Macro, Nikon 18-200mm f3.5-5.6 VR ED DX and the Tamron 18-250mm f3.5-6.3 LD Di II.

I placed an object about 10 feet away. Camera body was mounted on a tripod with wireless remotes on the D90 & D300. D3000 was fired manually. All three cameras were set on AP at f8. I took 4 shots with the 70-300s and 3 with the 18-200, and 4 with the 18-250mm. I have just started going through them and will upload in due course.

But I have a couple of observations to make in the meantime. There was very little difference between any of the lenses, in fact the Tamrons appear to have outperformed the Nikons at certain focal lengths. But the biggest surprise was the results between cameras, top was the D300 as expected, then the D3000(it does have a smaller sensor which could sway results slightly)and finally the D90. All shots were large/fine jpegs.

Okay, back to work on the shots. If anyone wants Hi-res results, PM me, but be warned the subject is boring:))
