For an upcoming studio portrait session, I want to try lighting my large white backdrop with 2 Nikon Speedlites (1 on either side of the setup, pointed at backdrop). My question is, do speedlites have enough spread to create a very even exposure across the entire backdrop (roughly 8 feet wide)? If not, should I modify each speedlite with an umbrella or something?

if you want even lighting across he backdrop you will need to light it with 2 units 1 on either side to keep the white u will need to light it with istop more light than the subject I would use an umbrella on each flash to ensure full coverage. I use a couple of 500w/s Electra uits on f/p with the main units on1/2power

if you are using SB-600s and dont have umbrellas pull down the little flap on the front that will help spread the light out quite a bit, If you do have umbrellas definately use them, you might have to play around a little bit moving the lights back and forth until you get the even lighting you want. But it will work. If you are using one of the other models of speed lights you can try to use the defuser that comes with the flash to help spread it out a little bit. if you want a cheap way out, get some printer paper and tape it to the sides of the light with the paper bowed out a little bit in front of the flash. It will act sort of like a shoot through umbrella.

Thanks!

I'm gonna play around with it :) And by the way I'm using SB900's. I'll try the diffusion dome first...and if that's not enough then small umbrellas.
