Great attitude !! we are all winners for entering this challenge...at last a challenge that is really really challenging, trying to express your own take on fine art is not easy thing to do.

The moment I saw this was to be juried as well as popular vote I knew I had to enter, this is something that I have wanted for this site for a long time.

It took me a total of 30 minutes to set-up, shoot, edit and upload my entry. Is it any good? I think so...will it score well with the judges or the popular vote? Not likely.....but it's a little piece of me and my take on fine art and that's all that matters.

Haha. I'm thinking I will probably come in last, but I give a standing ovation to this site for posting such a challenge and to the brave souls will will jury it.

I'm in!!!! Glad it's anonymous. Might have a chance.

My image totally sucks...(kinda) but what the heck. I hope I see images shot from the heart and NOT for Ribbons or high scores. There's a big difference. If you were thinking about votes while shooting there's a good chance the image will be a cheesball.

I don't see anything wrong with trying to score high in this challenge or (God forbid) win a ribbon. Of course here to score high you hopefully would need to do something different from other challenges. Creating fine art for a reward of some kind is a long standing cultural tradition :)

argh!! I just can't do this! I've spent the last 4 hours trying to get something, but everything I take is just a normal photo with a little different take on it. But nothing that fits this challenge.

I would love to take the 1x types of shots or shots like Ursula's. But I just picture anything in my mind, so I can't create it. This is the type of thing that has haunted me since I started here. How do you change things up? How can you see things other than they are?

bleh.

Look at the way the light strikes things. Anything. See the textures, patterns and shapes instead of the object itself. Photograph things at weird angles just to see what it looks like. Twist and tilt it when editing. Crop out small portions and see what they look like. Screw up the white balance until you say "Oh, cool!"

Hmmmmmmm... have you ever considered asking Ursula how she does it? She truly is a wonderful person and I have absolutely no doubt that she would tell you she ..can't remember simply focuses and shoots. :O)

What does this mean and how do you say it? It is "Gee Gee Gee" as in Jesus or "Hey Hey Hey" as in Jesús?

No thing, chair or brick, exists in a vacuum.
Neither do we. Also,
the job, the way I see it,

is not to "see things other than they are" but
to see things how they are,
when they are what they are,

prior to being claimed as a commodity or
someone's convenience to hit us
over the head with, things,

as Neruda says,
"that lived half of my life
and will die half my death".

Stop trying to see things. Let things show themselves to you. Be quiet & let them speak for themselves.

I don't think he is as his last name is Ward, but he did spend a great deal of time in southern California and did work on a fishing vessel.

Fact is, he is a man with a rather impressive past, world traveled and knowledgeable in a plethora of issues, and having held a host of different positions from sail maker, fisherman, university lecturer and chef. There are others, but they escape me at present.

I hope this helps a bit.

Right, thanks for the detailed reply. I was more curious about the "word" he was using than the person. It is great to see you offer up extra information though.

Can you opt out of the juried element of this challenge?

"Praise the world to the Angel, not the unsayable: you
can't impress him with glories of feeling: in the universe,
where he feels more deeply, you are a novice. So show
him a simple thing, fashioned in age after age,
that lives close to hand and in sight.
Tell him things. He'll be more amazed: as you were,
beside the rope-maker in Rome, or the potter beside the Nile.
Show him how happy things can be, how guiltless and ours,
how even the cry of grief decides on pure form,
serves as a thing, or dies into a thing: transient,
they look to us for deliverance, we, the most transient of all.
Will us to change them completely, in our invisible hearts,
into - oh, endlessly, into us! Whoever, in the end, we are."

Rilke, 9th of the Duino Elegies.
