I tried this in a camera shop the other day, although I didn't take my own camera in which I should have done. Got to say, I wasn't that impressed. This could have been because of the D90 or D60 whatever it was the guy gave it to me on, I wasn't familiar with the controls and it was focusing all over the place.

It seemed slow and noisy to focus, and even when stopped down a little didn't seem that sharp. It seemed big, bulky and ponderous compared to the 50mm 1.8, which is lightning quick to auto-focus. I was expecting more as I wanted to buy one, but didn't in the end.

Has anyone on here got one or used one? What are your opinions of this lens?

Not a lot to say because I don't have one, but the AF is going to be better on your D300 no matter what, so you might consider bringing your body in to check it out again.

Here's an interesting SLRGear.com review of different samples of the same lens (the new one), here's the regular SLRGear.com review of the G, and here's the regular review of the D.

The basic consensus on focus speed is this: the new one is worse in very low light, and slower on the higher-end cameras whose built-in motors are fast and would otherwise focus through the D lens very quickly (basically, the SWM is fast, but not as fast as a D300's built-in motor).

I'd say keep the D lens since you have it already. Probably has faster focus speed, and the sharpness tradeoff is not worth selling the lens.
