Hey, i took this shot a few nights ago, just at sunset. i really like it but i definately feel like somethings missing. so far ive tried adding a bit of contrast, dodging the horse a bit and some unsharp mask.
Im a bit stumped at the moment...can someone help me with a/some possible steps?

The colours at the horizon are nice and muted. Cropping out most of the sky I think would help with the composition as there is nothing in about the top third of the image.
I think you're on the right track in trying to increase the contrast and dodging the horse. Still needs a bit more IMHO. Levels may help there.

Nice shot.
I agree about the cropping.
I would be careful as you adjust contrast--you will lose some of the subtleness of the sky tones.
I suggest you run neatimage or equivalent on it as well to remove the noise from the sky.

Ok, heres some work on it...what do you think now?
Cropped, contrast, more dodging...a bit of neat image
I def. like the crop better, but im still not sure. its seeming a bit soft to me now... |

i like it better...but still.. try playing with it in levels.. go to the extremes and see what pops up! :)

It still seems a bit dark to me.
I hope you don't mind. I was bored so I did a bit of work with hue/sat and brought out the shadows a bit.

oh, i dont mind at all...as long as you tell me what you did ;) i really like it. im still in the begining of learning photoshop. would you mind posting a bit of what you did, so i can follow along and try it myself? im really trying to learn as much of the editing process, so i can use it again later.

First I cropped to get the composition you see.
1. Duplicate background
2. Select hightlights - ctrl alt ~ (see tutorial on highlights and shadows)
3. Select inverse
4. Click on layer mask icon at bottom of layers palette
5. Click G to select gradient tool
6. Draw a line on the image from just above the horizon on the left down to the base of the fence post. This will set the gradient to use when applying the layer blending.
7. Change the blending mode of the layer to screen
8. Create an adjustment layer for brightness/contrast. contrast + 18
9. Create an adjustment layer for hue/sat. Adjusted yellow hue (-14) and sat (+8). Adjust to taste.
It seems like a lot, but didn't take much time at all.

Here is my go at it.
Though that sunset should "pop" a bit more so.
Using the lasso tool I selected the sky around the tree line.
You can then right click and choose feather. I feathered by 50 pixels.
Then Image-Adjustments-Variations-More Magenta
Then Image-Adjustment-Color Balance
Add a little blue and magenta
Image-Adjustment-Brightness Contrast- Make a little less brightness and bump up the contrast
Right Click again "select inverse"
Now for the landscape
Image-Adjustments-Color Balance-
Here I bumped up the red and the yellow quite a bit. Just between middle and all the way.
Image-Adjustment-Brightness Contrast- Make a little brighter and a little more contrast
Horse
Again with the lasso tool select the horse. Right Click and feather 5 pixels.
Image-Adjustment-Variation-More Cyan

My attempt...
1. Set black point in levels.
2. Horizontal crob brought too much attention to the horizon and a verticle crop had too much sky, so I went with square.
3. I tried to crop so the fence post would bring more attention to the foreground. I thought this would add more depth.
4. The sky was too light and just went gray if I tried to burn or adjust the brightness.
4a. I created a duplicate layer and set the mode to multiply.
4b. I then created a mask set to hide all.
4c. With the mask selected, I used the linear gradient tool to create a gradient from the top down to the horizon.
I think the sky is too pink now, but my goal was to darken it so it would not pull away from the horse.

Of all these, which are all very nice, I like the first one best. I like the negative space and the placement of the animal in the frame. The negative space seems to indicate things that are greater or beyond the realm of the photo, so it's not just a photo of a horse, it's a photo of a scene or even perhaps a realm of thought. To add interest to the negative space, you could try a very gentle gradient of some sunset-y color already found in the photo. It looks quite NeatImage-ed, perhaps too much, but it's a nice, gentle shot.

Hey everyone...thank you SO much for all of your imput/training lol.
Ive taken the things that i liked from all of the photos, and i **think** ive come up with something that i like. i liked the square crop and the first crop i made the best...i decided to go with something similar to mine...i think im attracted to the sky, and the horse was the secondary element. i like the horse and the lower part to be brighter, and the sky to be more contrasted and smoother. anyway, heres what ive got now, and im pleased with both of them, i dont know which i like better though, the brighter, or darker one....more imput?
