Yes, maybe, but why? Clarity is beautiful in its own way. Though it may not be as poetic as you like, the message is very clear.

The "privilege" will cost you a paltry 6.8 cents per day. And you're complaining? So a site implements a members' feature to encourage investment in the community, and it's "bad business?" I'm sorry, but you are just way off base.
Your inflammatory language and combative attitude do not reflect well on you.

Edit to fix quote

Inflammatory language or a clear and direct description? This "selective" policy reflects poorly on this site regardless of how you feel my brevity reflects upon me. The cost of watermarking a historical challenge entries is minuscule compared to the bad message the "selective" policy conveys. You do not encourage membership by snubbing your nose at non-paying members who also contribute to the library of challenge images. Registered users who are encouraged to contribute. Maybe the better solution is to just close of challenges for non-paying members? That would be a more forthright approach than allowing their captured images to be continually stolen while locked into the DPC archives. Take the high road.

I wouldn't expect you or anyone to speak to my liking. And yes, your message is quite clear. What I was trying to point out to you was that the message you sent could be more effective, if it was less abrasively phrased.
Is this any clearer?

Zeusen, if my message needs to massage someone's ego in a PC way to encourage them to reevaluate the shortsightedness of their dictatorial policy, I'd rather not. The images of many former members/registered users are being left out to dry because the policy is in no way being offered as a sincere solution to image theft but rather a ridiculous marketing tactic.

My message being more effective? I'll let the more beloved members (politicians) roll this around, reinvent it and package it in a pretty bow to present it to Langdon so he can be lovingly nudged to reconsider this unintentional alienating policy.

I think "original quality" would work better. Even if it puts it over 300 KB, it shouldn't be a big deal (maybe adding 10-20 KB, tops). If it's that big of a deal, add something like:

new_quality=old_quality
while(new_size>307200)
new_quality=new_quality-1
end

(that's how i'd do it in matlab)

so basically, if the "new size" is above 300 KB, reprocess the original image and save it with a quality that's 1% less than the previous attempt. keep doing this until the final image size is at or below 300 KB.

Oh for crying out loud - personally, I don't think Langdon had to do anything about the watermarking - if you don't want it stolen, don't post it or watermark your own and post to your portfolio and don't enter any challenges. I think the solution he has come up with has some minor bugs he will work out, but to say that he is in any way obligated to protect anyone's images?? Pfffffffft. And if he wants to add more features to enhance membership status and encourage people to mortgage their house to pay that whopping annual fee, then he has every right to do so. Of course, if it were me, I would happily and automatically watermark all images for registered users who whine about having to become members to have access to advanced features.....

Your watermarks are OK Ken. But could they be 7% more transparent. Or could I choose my own transparency? And Could you make it so the watermark is a wee bit lower (or higher -). Actually whatever, just not what you suggested. And could you make the watermark in a salmon colour with a hint of peach. And make it snappy - I want it yesterday! :P

ETA: Quick please. My images are getting stolen as I type but I refuse to stop posting them. (reminds me of Homer eating a sandwich from Apu that expired years ago - "mmmmmm - yuck - mmmmmm - I'm getting sick - mmmmmmm - call the ambulance - mmmmmmm")

Woah man calm down. Instead of a coffee in the morning invest it in a membership here, you get a whole lot more here than with a cup of coffee. Two measly dollars a day.

If you're insulted by us telling you to spend some cash you don't have well then all I have to say is, find a less expensive hobby. Some people here give out memberships to registered users who deserve them, do you deserve one? hmmm

Complaining when you get everything here for free is just plain ........... (fill in the blanks).

I picked upper right corner, but the watermark is in the lower left???

I DO BELIEVE that a paid membership should come with privledges...Isn't that why you decide to join?? Otherwise why would there be a difference between a member and a non member....Just my opinion.

Holy crap, listen shunshine, I had been a paid member here for years while you were still lurking wondering whether you should submit a photo of a cheesecake your child took to impress their grade two teacher. It is not about the damn membership. Read my gripe before you wave your pitchfork at me.

IF Langdon retains perpetual use of ANY image, he should protect it period. Is that too complex? Take an ethics class and you may understand what I'm griping about.

Allow me to paraphrase Ivo in a tone that may be more PC. (He actually suggested this might happen a few posts below).

Since the site has the means to help protect everyone, registered users and members alike, DP Challenge should protect everyone.

I kinda agree. Is the ability to watermark my challenge submissions going to make me fork out $25? Probably not at all. I don't even think it would factor in. In fact, all that would happen is if I am actually worried about an image getting ripped off I just won't post it here. Which was another point Ivo was making. The body of work that represents DP Challenge was created by all of us not just paying members. As a site, I think we should do what we can to protect our work.

Watermarking everything with only members given the choice to opt out seems to be a good compromise here though stomping feet and name calling isn't really a good way of endearing one's self to the the owner of the site to convince him to change it.

I did. Tried a few times now with no luck.

Seems to be working now for me.

This is horrible to see this :
' . substr('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/997/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_766115.jpg', strrpos('//images.dpchallenge.com/images_challenge/0-999/997/120/Copyrighted_Image_Reuse_Prohibited_766115.jpg', '/') + 1) . '
Seeing original for members wasn't an option of the poll?

sigh...

Part of the issue may be with setting the batch watermarking in motion then going and trying to watermark individual images.

I've had a couple work and a couple just show in the bottom left. Also, when I went to set one manually both positions showed in the edit watermark preview.

Thats just rude he has entered more challenges than you, made twice the amount of comments than you,talks in the forums every other day where as you only seem to come on to stir it up and he has been here 2 years less than you. So don't be thinking you are all that Ivo, cos you aint (and yes that was rude too)

You may be right or wrong in your watermark issue that you have brought up, BUT there are perks for having a membership, this is one of them. Or what would be the point of even having this website? You can either buy and basic car or upgrade and get the nice twiddly bits. Your choice

If you go to the individual image you can place the watermark whereever you want so on this image it might work in the bottom right just above the border.

At least it worked that way, once for me. :o/
