I am pleased to announce that our watermarking solution is now available. There are some basic things that interested users should know about the system:

Watermarks can only be applied to challenge entries after the related challenge is out of voting. Watermarks are currently limited to black or white text ("© username.dpchallenge.com") written out horizontally in a set size with a certain degree of transparency. Watermarking is an opt-in feature and disabled by default.

Automatic watermarking options are available at the top of your portfolio, accessible through My Home/My Portfolio. These options are limited to two colors (white or black), 3 levels of opacity (low, medium, or high), and 5 different positions (top-left, top-right, center, bottom-left, bottom-right). The options are saved as soon as you select them and will apply to future entries. You can use the bulk apply link after changing your options to apply a particular configuration to all of your past entries.

You can override the automatic settings by clicking on a challenge entry from your portfolio and using the photo-specific watermark options link from there (halfway down). This override will allow you full control over watermark placement and give you a decent idea of how your watermark will look before applying it.

Finally, watermarking is only available to Members. Should your membership lapse, your watermarks will not be removed, however future entries will simply not be automatically watermarked.

Thank You!!!... Not just for this, but for this whole site!

Anyway, I have never been worried about my photos being stolen because quite frankly, I'm not at that level yet. BUT!!! it is nice to know that this site offers some protection to some of the masterpieces that are floating around here. Lastly, thanks for listening to those who were really concerned with this, because it was apparent that photo theft was becoming a problem...

Well done Langdon. My only comment is that the watermarks on my images say "advertising.dpchallenge.com" not "bassbone.dpchallenge.com".

I just noticed the same... fixing. :) Edit: Squared away.

So when you add a watermark to an image is it resaved? If so does it save it at 100% jpg compression or something lower?

Not sure but when I looked at the properties of the image with and without the watermark, there was a significant change in file size. Watermarked image was 85 kb, non watermarked images 278 kb. Perhaps I am confused though as quality looks similar.

So this only applies to the Challenge entries and not any of the other portfolio images?

I chose "center" for position, but they seem to be showing up in the bottom left hand corner.

Perhaps the smaller file size is an overlay image that the watermark is using and that's the property you're seeing?

Good question... I didn't specify quality, so I think the default is 85%. I can bump that up if there are complaints. I think in your case, Joe, the 275kb one was saved at 100%?

Did you hit the Apply link after changing your settings?

Correct. There was some debate over whether or not we would apply watermarks to portfolio entries, but storage space would basically double to handle watermarking for portfolio photos, and I wasn't ready for that. Users can, of course, apply there own prior to uploading with a simple Photoshop action.

sounds good, thanks Langdon :)

SC - thanks for all you do. This site is enjoyable, and you folks work very hard to make and keep it that way.

I tried the same thing and its doing the same to me... selected the options and CENTER and its defaulting to lower left, and yes hit the apply link as well...

I did. Tried a few times now with no luck.

What if you change your username? Will the old watermarks change too?

I chose "bottom right", and it shows up just below centre.

Congrats on the watermarking solution but you seem to miss a point. If you are going to prevent people from removing their images, as in completed challenge entries, you should automatically watermark the images regardless of whether they are, were, or will decide to become members. Offering watermarking to members only is blatantly discriminatory and coercive. Step up and watermark everything you retain in the "permanent" library of images.

If not, give those who are not "privileged" the opportunity to remove them.

At this point, this choice of a selective solution is bad business.

God, Ivo, isn't there a more delicate way to say the same?
02/10/2010 09:59:17 PM · #22
actually, I agree with Ivo (is this a first?) The site should be actively trying to protect people's images. Everyone's images. I people are continually getting their images stolen from DPC, DPC gets a bad name. No one's going to say, "oh, they're just a registered member, it's ok to steal their images." (well, someone might, be we don't listen to that person anyway.)

Theft is unacceptable. Period. And DPC should be protecting its own reputation. Not just selectively.

Maybe watermark all images and only give members the option to opt out if you want to do something selective.

The "privilege" will cost you a paltry 6.8 cents per day. And you're complaining? So a site implements a members' feature to encourage investment in the community, and it's "bad business?" I'm sorry, but you are just way off base.
Your inflammatory language and combative attitude do not reflect well on you.

Edit to fix quote

I'm sorry, but $25.00 a year... is far from "PRIVILEGED"... I mean.. at 7 cents a day, I don't feel like I'm living the high life...LOL... If watermarks are discriminatory and coercive, then what is a Free Study Challenge??? If you want those features, become a member...

Secondly, if you are not a paying member, and not going to become one. How is alienating you, for the paying customer, bad business??? If anything, its good business because its catering to those who actually pay for this site, so that you can continue to use it FOR FREE!

edited for spelling :)
