Did I really do that? Disorganized me? Thanks for the shout-out :-)

We already have a jury empaneled and ready to go when/if the "Fine Arts" challenge topic is announced. It's sort of developed in parallel to this experience, which was a remarkable one at many levels. So we'll see where it leads :-)

But remember; these "juries" just provide an alternative viewpoint to the mass voting aspect, which is still the core of the DPC experience. Nobody's even hinting that we should switch from voting en masse to juried challenges. Not that I've seen, anyway...

I don't know... it's a fine forum diversion, but I disagree. We already have a voting system in place, imperfect as it may be. Just my gut reaction, not to take away from the fun of this exercise.

I know what you're talking about but for me I don't see it as a substitute for the voting system but more like the posthumous awards. Just an interesting way to highlight more images. Sometimes so many are lost in free studies and while I'd like to go all of through them I just don't have the time and this was a way to appreciate so many more on a wider level.

Ah, Bear didn't see your post or I would have quoted you.

A good idea, and well done. I would also like to see more "juried" side challenges.

And thanks for the honorable mention.

Also, thanks for including the judges comments/analysis. An interesting read on all the finalist photos.

Congratulations to the winners, the finalists, and all the participants.

I didn't mean to be a grouch -- you make good points (Robert/Urfa/Neal/etc). Maybe it's just that I think (regardless of my own skill level) that my opinion is as valid as anyone's, so *I* want to choose. Maybe if the juried side-challenges continue, the juries could rotate. Or maybe I'll feel differently about the whole process when my entry wins a citation!

Great job, guys! And I too loved your commentaries on the photos. You're just making me want to see more juried judging in some of the competitions. Thanks for all your work and effort!

How did I miss this?

I'm sad.

I'll just have to be happy knowing that had I entered, nobody else would have had a chance.

Oh, I completely agree that the juries would have to be different every time. Having the same jury, especially on a site that can be as intimate as DPC, would only eventually (and maybe even not so eventually), lead to far more biased voting and choosing, and opportunity for corruption and the picking of the same groups of names over and over.

Things like this NEED fresh blood all the time, to keep it from going stale.

What a tough job! THANKS for doing that for us, Jury!

Congrats to the winners!

Although, I have to say... looking at all of the entries, there's not a bad one amongst them!

Congratulations to all the winners .. well deserved placings all of them. And many thanks for the hard work put into organising this side challenge, it was fun to participate.

Congrats to the winners. I very much enjoyed reading the coments on each image. To get an insight on how "this" particular jury felt was interesting and entertaining.

Ah, but you don't get to choose. The Electorate gets to choose. Your vote gets drowned out in the noise.

Listen, there's something to be said for any group of people who are on a "panel" and feel pressure to be thoughtful about their decision, regardless of who they are. Then to take it further, and pick people who like to think about photography and can express their opinions in words, well, that's just dandy as far as I'm concerned. Their choices interest me far more than the lowest common denominator shots that win ribbons.

Wow! This is so cool being mentioned in this thread. I'm quite flattered - Thank you!

My apologies for the delay in responding...with the storm that hit our area we lost power yesterday (Saturday) morning. After spending one night in a rather cold dark house we gave in and checked into a hotel. The hot shower and hot meal were heavenly. :-)

I setup a camera in a window the day the storm started and took a photo every couple hours for a time lapse series...can't wait to see how that came out.

Brilliant stuff. Congratulations to the winners.
And you even made Langdon make a comment in this thread.

Only saw this thread now and almost missed it. Congratulations to the winners! Although there were so many excellenet pictures I think the jury did a great job and it was also nice to read the comments made next to the photos. Thanks once again

Oh, for SURE "rotation" of the jury is in the cards. I don't think there's any of from this jury who want to be a permanent juror, that's a terrible (and time-consuming) idea. Left different folks express different points-of-view, for sure. Maybe have one carryover juror to help coordinate the next batch, I donno. That's an issue for another day. But I can guarantee y'all that this particular jury-of-5 will never convene again :-)

We did good work, and now our work is done... Or something like that...

You guys did great work. I agree, to have multiple users participate. However, I do believe it is probably much more work than was expected. Congrats you five on a job well done.

The only criteria I would set for a panel is that they have a deep love, understanding, passion and experience shooting the particular topic/genre being judged.

I would like to see others pick up this ball and run with it. Other juries will reach different results by different processes. By going beyond a simple announcement of the "winners," as we tried to do, such endeavors may foster more discussion, understanding and learning on this site.

Different jurors are critical to the process. Each of our jurors brought different views and personal styles of photography to the table. I thought that was beneficial, in that it forced jurors to explain and defend their view of images that resonated with them but not as much with others. I think it would also be interesting to see a jury formed from people with a cohesive point of view, to explore a certain style of image in depth, starting from a common viewpoint.

When I started this process, I had envisioned that, if it worked, I might run (as a facilitator, not a juror) a series of juried challenges tied to the monthly Free Studies. Each month would be a different topic ... macro, street, portrait, what have you ... announced in advance and then all entries fitting that style would be judged by a different panel of respected members and users each month, with each panel including some experts in that chosen genre for that month.

I would still like to see something like that occur, but at this point I don't have any plans to do it. New blood is critical at that end too.

Leave those balls alone and find a balloon instead.

Excellent idea :-) I think it's delicious how it chooses an arbitrary "theme" out of the free study field which, if announced ahead of time, might foster more themed entries within that free study, which is just... well.... interesting :-)
