How about having a completely open challenge. This way people can photo whatever they like. We should see some stunning photos from the more experienced and creative people in here and maybe we would completely lose any threads or comments about whether or not the challenge was met(at least for one week anyway).

I like that. It would be nice to do that every 3 months of so. Call it "Favorite Subject" or something of that nature.

This idea has come up before and never materialized... I believe the reasoning behind it was that it was not in the spirit of the 'challenge' concept. I, personally, would love to see an open challenge. I think that the photographers here that participate regularly need the opportunity every now and then to let their creativity and mind run free, without being limited by a topic.

It would definitely make for a competitive challenge :)

Maybe instead of a contest, there could be a quarterly "gallery" submission (in addition to the weekly challenges). People could submit their best shot anytime within that 3-month period, but the images could all be "unveiled" simultaneously so no-one knows what others are doing...
My preference would be to have commenting but not voting, but it could also run just like a regular challenge. In that case, I'd suggest skipping one regular challenge so folks don't have to vote on two sets of pictures, or allow 2 weeks or more for voting for the "gallery" photos.

Great idea! Could be called FreeStyle or something. It would be interesting to see how the votes go when it's strictly on the merits of each shot.

Hmmm...I seem to remember the other reason this has never been implemented is that there are a bunch of other photo site which are more like that. Having the limits of the challenge is one of the things maing this site unique.

Hmmm, the only problem I can see is the people who don't seem to know how to give any comment except "Your photo didn't meet the challange". What about them?

If you photographed a door or a window that was closed, you would not meet an open challenge :))

What if the door or window is un-locked???
Then I think it would comply.
But how can the viewer tell its not locked unless we give it a title "the un-locked" door.
