Before I submit, I would like to know: is the High Pass filter allowed in Basic Editing? Is it considered an effect filter?

In order to use the high pass filter for sharpening (which is what I would guess you are asking), you have to use a second photo layer and then use one of the blending modes other than normal. Both of these are still forbidden in basic.

If just using it alone, I would think it would be as an effects filter, so probably no.

But if you think you might be using it legally, you can always submit your photo (before and after) in a ticket for a multi-SC opinion. You should try to allow sufficient time to get a response, though, which can take 2-3 days (at least to get a few different SC members to examine the before/after and chime in with an opinion).

Thanks! You are right, normal layer only, so illegal. 8P

Yes it is, I found out the hard way having been DQ'd for using High Pass :(

But I have noticed recently that Corel Photopaint X has High pass as an option in filters like USM, I would assume its legal to use this option as you don't have to manually create a new picture layer? Is this one of the quirks of the basic rules? if there is a button to do something its legal but if you do exactly the same thing by hand its illegal?????

I've recently learned about this technique from Pop Photo magazine. This is a great way to sharpen photos without overly accentuating image noise. The technique goes:

Duplicate Background Layer
Desaturate Background Copy
Apply High Pass: Filter-Other-High Pass (tweak bar for desired sharpness)
Blend using Overlay, Soft Light, Hard Light

Now my question is, is it legal for Advanced Editing?

Sure, no problem.
