Do any of you know of a good freeware for scanning pictures?

I have an older scanjet 3970 and I have the driver for it but would like a different software for scanning other than using the import option in windows 7.

thanks

I think these are unique to the scanner model. If you are talking about a twain driver, it will carry it's own interface and I don't think there's anything you can change about it. Once you pull it into your image editor, you can then do whatever else you want with the image.

When you say TWAIN is that driver or software...?

I just need something that has a better flow as I have many pictures to scan and with the windows 7 import there are like three or four steps that are repetitive and I'd like to avoid them if possible...

Meaning that after I scan one I have to start the software all over again..

Well, it's kind of both. I have a Canon LIDE 30 scanner and I usually use the Canoscan software that comes with it. The actual interface that comes up when I do the scan belongs to the driver, and this is what I see whether I am using the Canoscan software or pulling a scan into an application like PaintShop Pro.

Here is the download page for the scanjet 3970 The description says: "This is the complete download of hp photo and imaging, v.2.2, for the hp scanjet 3970 scanner. This software does not contain any third party applications."

Sounds like this includes the extra software that will be similar in function to the Canoscan package that comes with mine.

While on the subject of scanners, I've been looking at replacing my LIDE 30. The LIDE 30 is about 5 years old and I doubt 64 bit drivers will ever be released for it, plus I want something that can scan film. I've heard good reviews of the Epson V300 and V500. Anyone on the forum have one of these?

Not free but vuescan is a decent product and it supports a LOT of scanners even on 64bit. I recently bought it resume this life long scanning that I am on as Nikon didn't bother with 64bit drivers for their scanners.

I'll have a look for that, thanks.

Added: Had a look. It may solve the OP's problem, but since it requires you to have the driver already, it won't solve my issue with my scanner not working on 64 bit Win7.

Yeah, It's has drivers that will be installed if it does not find ones there - including 64bit drivers.... I run it on Vista 64bit and there were no drivers from Nikon for my Nikon Coolscan 5000 but the VueScan supplied driver was able to run everything on the scanner (IR led e.t.c.). The trial is a full version, so download and make sure it works first.

Edit: To fix words so they make sense :-/
