Hi, I'm rather new to the group and would like a little help in understanding how to make my images the best they can be and I hope someone will indulge me for a moment and look over these variations I've created of my most recent entry. First, I am in no way complaining about my finish. I'm delighted, but I feel like I was very close on this one and want to figure out what the missing elements were.

I shot three images of this neon sign for the multiple light sources challenge. Only one came out to my satisfaction and I cropped and rotated it to create what I thought was the best composition.

But maybe I'm a little off on what would be the most pleasing.

Original (straight from camera - just resized for this posting):

As entered:
(I couldn't get the thumbnail from DPC to work, you can view the entry with comments here.

What I would have liked to enter:

I didn't enter it because I cloned out the obstruction at the bottom which is against the open challenge rules, but I'd like to know if it would have done any better.

An alternate I rejected:

You can view all these in larger size at my photobucket gallery:

I would appreciate any feedback folks can give me. I realize that part of my problem may have been my choice of subject - I noticed that I was the only one in the challenge that chose neon as the primary focus of the composition and perhaps making my light source my subject was my primary downfall. (I can only figure that's where the low end scores came from.)

Thanks to all those folks who took the time to vote and those who left those wonderful comments for me.

Thanks for your help Kylie. I just wanted to check because two of the comments expressed that they wanted more negative space under the text at the bottom, and though I could have cropped it that way, it would have meant some other composition compromises.

Thanks!

I liked your shot, but seeing the three together, I kinda like the original best of all. Seems like the bottom area where you cropped leads my eyes up, up, up and the scale seems bigger. Also, before it was rotated, the angle added to the scale IMHO. I thought it was a unique entry and was technically a good picture.

They are all good, but I think my favorite is the original. It has more depth for me and I like seeing the wonderfull arcitectural lines.

Thanks everyone. I'll learn to trust my instincts when I'm shooting, instead of second-guessing myself in front of the computer.

I too liked the architecture on the original better and felt that it fit the challenge slightly better because more of the fluting on the building showed.

I appreciate everyone taking time to check the photos out.

Just to show we all see things a bit differently, I would probably have compained about the triangle in the bottom right corner of the original.

But - like everyone else has said - they were all very nice images.

I also think some voters probably deducted something as they felt the subject should have been lit by multiple sources of lighting. That's true in your case for sure, but some may have felt thet the SUBJECT of your shot, the neon signs themselves, were the multiple sources.

I like the original the most as well. I think that little bit of obstruction actually adds perspective to the photo, and it is very interesting to look at!
