drive. It's almost faster to drive from someplace in canada to florida than to take a plane

What?! A drive from my place to Florida would take 22 hours of non-stop driving, and I live on the southernmost, most populous tip of the country, near the country's largest city. There are twelve or thirteen states or portions thereof that are north of me. A flight would be about three hours or so. His flight, from Calgary (west and north of here) would be six hours, and the drive a heck of a lot more. :)

3 hours, plus travel time to and from airport, plus another 3+ hours waiting in line, plus plane delays, it all adds up! See the country, explore!

ok so Im looking at making another trip south in a month or so and Im seriously confused as to what can and can't be brought on the planes now in light of all the new restrictions as of the changes at Christmas. Are people still getting on with camera bags or are they being forced to check them? If anyone has info Id be very grateful!

Amen! I haven't flown in 5 years. I bought my current car in 2007, and I've driven it through 46 states. I like flying... I just don't like the hassle of flying.

Anyone know if there is some wiggle room for people going through the US to somewhere else? Or will I be subjected to the same, one item carry on, restricted to said items?

Hey Dave and Pidge..

In my most recent experience (week and a half ago) flying into the States, I've heard from passengers that they had to check their camera bags.. alot of slr's are being carried on by hand. As well as laptops..by hand. I'm flying out again tomorrow.. if anything changes I'll let you know.

Flying from the USA to other destinations seems to be pretty lax on the rules..

Best advice: Double check with your airline as well as Customs website, to find out whats being restricted currently.. its changing from day to day.

Good luck :)

just got back from Ottawa <->San Fransisco last weekend (conference )
getting on the plane in Ottawa (with my spouse - 14th of Jan)
Lowenpro Minitrekker D3/14mm/24-70mm/80-200mm & a laptop bag with Two laptops + a purse (not mine)

we were pretty much the ONLY people who had any carry on & the above bins were empty
connecting fights in the USA everybody had duffel bags & rolling luggage & you could barely fit anything in thje above bins

(stupid 15$ charges per piece of checked luggage ) they still 'misplaced' our checked luggage for 12 hours ...

the conncting USA flight was the same & the international fight was strict 1 carry on per person - we didn't test it ..
to zonked at tat point to ask ...

IF i was to travel by myself i would use a laptop/camera bag & fill it ...
we were at the airport 2.5 hours befor the flight (5:30 am ) no line up ZZZzzz...
people leaving Vancouver for the same conference were in line at customs for 3+ hours ...
so YMMV

I am hoping to travel to Australia for a month in April and while this would most certainly help when travelling to OZ, I fear that I might have to place my camera gear in my luggage for the trip back... (shudder and cringe). Hopefully this requirement will have gone the way of the dodo bird by then. :O)
