To the challenge. But it is a members only challenge. If you really want in you could join for the month.

Thanks Kelli..

Keep em coming! Looks like a jury will come together ... everyone who enters here will be eligible for the juried part of the competition, regardless of number of entries in the category, but part of the judging will be based on what the photo brings to the category you select. More details to follow, after I confab with the potential jurors.

It can be any kind of portrait, right? Doesn't have to be a studio?

Hi all –

Getting down to the wire. Hope you have your entries in, and if you haven’t joined up yet there’s still time. I’m really happy to announce that there WILL be a juried component to the challenge, following completion of the site challenge. Thanks to Dr.Confuser, DrAchoo and bspurgeon for agreeing to join me on the jury. There’s one more well-respected member too, who I will announce as soon as I get confirmation that he’s in. Every photo entered in the side challenge will be considered, regardless of score. (Jurors are not eligible, of course). The judging will be based on four components, with relatively equal weight given to each:

(1) Technical Achievement: How well did the photographer utilize his or her tools in creating the image? Did s/he select the right tool for what s/he was trying to accomplish? Composition, lighting, sharpness (or blur, if intended), f/stop and lens selection, and post processing techniques are all considered here.

(2) Subject Matter/Thought Process: Did the photographer choose an appropriate subject to their theme, and work it well? Did the photographer recognize the moment to snap a shutter? How does the photograph stack up against others in its genre? This category explores the continuum between a snapshot (even a well-executed one) and a photograph.

(3) Originality/Creativity: Did the photographer bring something new to the table, or simply show us something we’ve seen before? This category is intended to cover aspects of both subject matter and technique (in camera or post-)

(4) Impact/Emotion: Does the photograph tell a story, suggest a feeling, or make us think? What is the visceral, emotional impact of the image, beyond its technical achievements?

Not too late. Entrants will be accepted up until the entry deadline. To avoid overtaxing our jurors, I may cap it at the first 100 or so for the juried component.

Nope, any kind of portrait will do. The categories (portrait + studio) were combined to get a critical mass for the site scoring component of the challenge, and there seemed to be enough similarities to justify the combined category (same as with landscape-nature-animals).

ok, you can put me in the Landscape/Nature category...Thanks...

OK, I've put mine in studio/portrait because I didn't know where to put it but now I think I should change it. Without giving it away, it fits in these categories: macro (no category for that), creative, studio and nature. Where should I put it?

Go for creative. There's only two registered entries there.

Thought of that, but maybe it's not "creative" enough, doesn't really fit any of the examples he listed (lensbaby, HDR, etc).

I've got my photo entered and would like to join this side challenge.

My photo falls more under the category of "Sports/Action". Which of your categories would you rather I put my entry?

Thanks alot this sounds fun.
