Hi all,

I previously bought a Alien Bees 800 kit with stand and umbrella and now i have purchased a background stand and a 103" roll of white paper. I understand that a good way to get multiple backgrounds out of one background is to use coloured gels and a background light. I am trying to understand what power of lights i would need to get for the background lights. Do they need to be strobe as well? Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi, it depends what type of pics you want to take... if it'sfull body shots, then you want your background relatively far from the model so there are no shadows on the background... in which case you need a large background... (I think the one you have is good enough) in that case you need lots of light...

I use two B-800 lights for teh background, but you might be able to get away with just one...

(the barn doors prevent any lens flares from the background lights from screwing up the picture...

Thanks for the info. 2 AB-800s are definitely out of my budget right now, but i might be able to swing one. I found the below article and liked the setup they had for the background. I think its just one single light and it looks pretty good.

Nice!! but remember, they are not doing a full body shot... so they can get away with only one light...

also notice that they use three lights on the model... but still nice!

Ahhh... I often wondered what barn doors were for!

Do the lights on the model from behind need to be as strong? Is there any sort of general rule on which lights should be the best and which ones you can get away with something a little less?

Another example is Yousef Karsh who liked to light parts of his subject with an additional light, I am curious what sort of light was used.

Thanks,
