Getting a 7D next week and adding a 10-22 and my grandmother said she wanted to gift me another lens.

I am hoping to get a 5DIII about a year after it comes out (prob 3 years from now), so eventually I will be doing the FF thing.

To save you having to check my profile, I have:
Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
Canon 80-200 f/2.8L

Will have the Canon 10-22.

Considering the Sigma 30mm f/1.4 - although I hear it's no good for FF.

Therefore I am also seriously considering the 28mm f/1.8 USM. I've heard that it's soft on the edges, but I don't think that's a real issue for anything at f/1.8 anyhow. Apparently it also has problems with chromatic aberration, which probably means that it needs updating... Which will leave me disappointed if it gets updated in the next year and I need to trade up....

Anyhow, I'm toying with the ideas.

To all you who have been using the 7D for a few months already, what lens do you usually use?

Feel free to contribute far and wide on the subject of lenses on the 7D for doing movies.

Thanks!

Only have had the 7D for a week but keep going back to my 17-55 f/2.8 IS. The stabilization works well in movie mode, I have always been happy with the images from this lens and the focus stays on during zoom. I think it will be good walk around lens.

My longer lenses show a lot of shake and will need tracking in post processing to stabilize if they are not shot from a tripod and 10-22mm tends to capture alot of distracting extra unless the shoot is well planned first.

What kind of video do you plan to shoot?

The serious videos that I will be shooting will be collabs with another guy at work. We are doing 3 series of vids.

Two are personal mini-documentaries (comprising 3-4 vids). One series about people. One series about the production history and background. We will probably enlist the help of a friend of mine who is a professional camera handler from the Vanc. film industry.

The rest are pretty basic, a long series of testing vids that will probably use multiple camera angles. (50mm at f/8 I guess) All tripod mounted.

Personally, I will probably look at doing a music video or two, just my own stuff. Nothing too special. But I hope to get a bit of a look at the area where I have lived for the past 4 years and send that on homewards.

PS. You are very evil. ;) Now I am lusting after the 17-55 f/2.8 IS which is SO not practical if I go FF later... and so beyond my budget. And SO sweet. Damn. Found one for $990. I can almost afford that... If I stop eating for a week or two.... hrm....

Anyone wanna buy a slightly used Tamron 17-50 f/2.8? :)

Durnit, I might just have to get that.

I haven't even tried movie mode yet... no idea how it works or how you focus! Maybe I should read the little book that came with the camera.... :-)

Enjoy the new toy!

24-70 will work for you in still and movie modes in small frame and FF.

True, however I won't be ready for FF for about another 3 years or so. And the focal length isn't the best. I am quite used to the 17-50.

It's not so much about what ranges it covers, it's more what can be done with that lens without having to change.

Honestly, once I go FF, I'll probably be going 16-35 and 24-70, but that's a bit too steep for my budget right now.

Who knows, maybe the 24-70 will have a dual shift IS model out in 3 years. :)

That is a possibility, since Canon just released a new model 70-200 2.8 IS.

I'm getting the 7D very soon myself. Definitely going to get the Canon 17-55 to go with it. And over time will also get the 10-22mm. Other than that, will probably rent a few lenses to get a better feel for what I need. I'd also love to go FF when the new 5D comes out but read that won't be so soon. Yes my choice of lenses means I'd have to sell those two ef-s lenses if I'll go FF. I reckon the depreciation isn't as bad for lenses as for the bodies themselves. Even with the 15-85 lens out now, I'm still going for the 17-55, for the f2.8.

Going a little off topic here. From my reading a bunch of threads at the Cinema5D, DVXuser, and DVInfo forums... when shooting video there are few extra accessories you need to make the process easier. If you want to get a more film like look , it's recommended to shoot at a 1/50 shutter speed setting. Sometimes even iso100 will be too bright and that won't cut it. So if you want to get the background to blur while shooting outside , you will need ND filters. There's one that's cheaper than the Singh-Ray VariND called the Fader ND. Of course you can stack the filters you might already have. When you buy new filters buy the largest ring size you can afford, to prevent vignetting and so you dont have to carry different sizes . e.g. 58mm and 77mm. You can buy a step up ring to make the bigger filters fit onto the smaller lenses.

The other accessory is a Hoodman Loupe or Zacuto Z-Finder sort of device. Makes it a lot easier to get the focus in check. One can go on and on , Videography can get a lot more expensive than photography ;) Small rigs that you can attach your camera to(for the video shooting ergonomics), are just tubing and rubber, go up into >$500 range.

And to wet your appetite ;) The IS on the new 100mm macro lens, well it works great for video. Vincet LaForet did a little test of it at the PhotoPlus session I attended , it helps a lot when shooting handheld. The focal length does seem to be odd for shooting video but for handheld macro photography, one can't ask for more.
