Hi,

Thought it would be interesting to have a section on DPChallenge that ranked all the lenses based on the scores of the images they take.

i.e. when you look up a particular canon L lens you can see the average of all the votes received over all the images taken with that piece of glass. Perhaps also a sum.

... just out of interest.

Before people start throwing rocks, of course there are other factors involved (like obviously, the skill of the photographer)

I agree. we need to have additions to the hardware page. We have a wealth of resources in the shape of members who have knowledge and experience. To not utilize them is a shame.. Not only do we need stats regarding equipment but we also need to be able to rate and comment on the equipment page. The scope of this site will increase immensely

Hi!

We already have it, but remember it's not too reliable.

//www.dpchallenge.com/lens.php?action=browse&view=avgvote

Because a lens that was only used once, but had a 7+ score, will be high on top, and in fact doesn't mean that a lot of people used it (not saying that it's bad, it's simply rare).

Cheers,
Joao

Thanks for the link, Joao.
I'm curious -- taking the first lens as an example (Voigtlander Skopar 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 for Canon), it lists the number of submissions as "12." But when you click through to the lens info page, it only shows one entry under the challenge photos taken with that lens. Are "entries" and "submissions" two different things?

No worries :)

I was also curious, as only one picture can be found with that lens. Going on a limb here, I imagine that they are referring to 12 entries counting Challenges and Portfolio images. And since portfolio images can be deleted, maybe it's the reason why we can't find more of them. Then again, I may be wrong :P

That does seem like a bit of a disconnect. ??? I always thought that the "submissions" number was for the number of challenge entries with that lens... Hmmm.

I'm not sure, but I think every time you put an image in your portfolio with a particular lens listed, that's a submission.

That would make sense, and certainly explains the disconnect.

I have one lens that's somewhat unique that I've used for 8 challenge entries, and it shows 10 submissions. For the life of me I can't find the other 2 photos. I wish we could search photos based on a specific lens...

Somewhat unique? You have the only 8 entries with it :)

Hopefully I dont come across sounding like an arse but the lenses have little to do with the scores. Its like me saying I want to get a paint brush that Leonardo da Vinci used so I can paint beautiful scenes like he did. The lens is just part of an assembly of tools that the photographer uses to paint his or her vision.

Ahhhh, yes. But...can you find the other two? Therein lies the question. :-)

Hi Dave,

You're quite right, you just have to read the disclaimer at the bottom :-P

Note: A lens must have 3 total submissions to make this chart. Keep in mind that the 'average vote' for a lens is really a novelty statistic, as these scores largely reflect the photographer's skill rather than lens quality.

I found this interesting, best to go wide for the high votes!

Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 EX DC HSM for Nikon submissions 1552 score 6.022
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM submissions 929 score 5.986
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L USM II submissions 542 score 5.930
Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 12-24mm f/4.0G IF-ED submissions 693 score 5.904

Canon 50mm primes, couldn't find the f/1.8 II

Canon EF 50mm f1.2L submissions 266 score 5.935
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM submissions 3147 score 5.557
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 I submissions 441 score 5.384

Most submissions with lowest average (thanks to Whiterook I believe)

Konica Minolta 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 MZ submissions 161 score 4.244

Let me give you another perspective on that, just for the heck of it:

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands, of different artist's brushes available, made of different materials, in different sizes, with different shapes, for different and, often, very specific purposes. I really admire the way Leonardo da Vinci handled the illusion of softness in the draped shawl in his "Portrait of Judi, Reclining", and I'd be really interested to know which specific brush he used to get that effect.

See my point? The lenses are tools, after all, and we do have to make choices between them.

I just bought the cheapo 50mm f/1.8 Series E in order to resell it for more than I bought it for (it was a bargain); but now that this thread came up, I think I'm gonna try beating the top score for it (5.8227), and THEN sell it. Granted, I've only had two submissions score higher than that since I joined, but it's worth a shot!

Agreed, and well put. I would add that in addition to being 'different', some lenses enjoy a qualitative advantage over others... being sharper, having lower f-stops, faster speed of focus, etc..., can affect the final work of art positively.

So yeah, the artist is the biggest element in the equation, but some brushes have more 'abilities' that let him/her expand their repertoire.

If I want to take pictures like Roz, I must not use my kit lens :-D

Yeah, its neat to see the scores from a particular lens. Personally, I am still waiting for the reviews on equipment. I'm wondering, when we will be able to see the user rating? If you go to equipment, it is there. But say's coming soon. It's said that since I have joined!
A user rating, with review would be very useful. I know we can search the web, but I'd prefer to see the reviews from DPCers.

Maybe it double counts a submission if you enter a challenge then unsubmit the entry and resubmit before the challenge begins.

Maybe, but I don't remember doing that. I'll usually just upload a new image if I want to submit a revised version before rollover.

this place really needs to get a user-generated reviews section.

Scores out of 10, that kinda thing.

then there would have been only talented photographers and no L series lenses for Canon users. I would love to live in such an ideal world.
