One of my comments says just the opposite, funny enough - my image is of something that is visibly very broken, but the commenter states that (even though broken) "they still work".

*scritch scritch"

I just got one that said something like "how am I supposed to know this doesn't work anymore?"

Umm well the challenge is called "Things that don't work anymore" and you should take our word they don't work. "Asshole!"

ROFL!!! Is your keyboard still "working" after that comment?! ;-)

I smell frustration. Maybe you should take a break from DPC and photography for a while dude!

This reminds me of couple of important forum rules.

# Watch your language. While it is not our intention to censor all use of foul language, please respect your fellow participants. We can and will remove excessive, gratuitous and inappropriate use of foul language.

# Do not attack other users. This includes "calling out" specific comments or commenters in a hostile manner. Personal attacks are never appropriate in a constructive discussion. If you disagree with another participant, address their points without attacking them personally. Be aware that others may have differing opinions of a personal attack, so use care when posting. Please note that this includes publicly "calling out" commenters (whether by name or not) in a hostile way.

And it also shows the wisdom in not calling out a commenter for other reasons...what's to keep them from lowering your score after you call them out?

I am watching it, and who did I call out?

I think you need to reread the rules I posted. But I'll help:

"... aware that others may have differing opinions of a personal attack, so use care when posting. Please note that this includes publicly "calling out" commenters (whether by name or not) in a hostile way. "

What BS... I've seen way worse posts but I see how you work now. Ill refrain from post anymore here just to please you.

If you see way worse posts, then report them and we will deal with them appropriately. Calling your fellow members assholes simply for committing the apparently heinous crime of taking the time to give you honest feedback on your photos is completely unacceptable.

Why are you calling members dicks? You do know this is a member only challenge, right? So why are you calling fellow members dicks?

Well, without getting into details, it's been done before and SC didn't mind. This thread is not the place to discuss that though.

Actually, we *do* mind, even more so in a member challenge. Those "dicks" are your fellow paying members, and in an anonymous challenge, possibly even your friends.

Why is it so difficult to accept out of hundreds of viewers or voters, that a few of them may, for whatever reason, genuinely dislike your photo?

Such a low score and only one had the guts to tell me why (thank you) and one liked it enough to make it a fav.

I went from a 5.4 to a 5.2. The humor challenge is even worse! Those scores are dropping like flies!
01/16/2010 10:50:28 PM · #145
Well, no better results here.

I was already low
at 77 votes 4.8571

then dropped steadily to
at 106 votes 4.7925

then drowned in 2's and 3's
at 115 votes 4.6435

and then someone got pity and gave me a 6
at 118 votes 4.6610

Still only one comment so far and one fav.

Maybe I should have better entered a photo of my score in Humor, ha ha.

didn't think I could get much lower, but I did. Thinking brown. That would be okay with me.

edited to add: I agree with Titia - maybe this should be entered in humor

I can see Dirt Diver's point in this one and I also see the commenter's point of view to some degree. I think a lot of voters are looking for the "visibly broken" and if it isn't apparent to them that it's broken/falling apart, they won't vote it a decent score. However, from Dirt's perspective, I can see how frustrating this is and to have comments questioning his broken subject matter, means that in some way, he's being questioned as to whether he's stupid/shoehorning it LOL.

I used to go into every challenge, ticking off EVERY comment made by voters simply because they took the time to comment. I figured that we all gripe about comments and not getting any when we're low or sitting middle of the road so, if someone takes their time to make a comment, I figure it's "helpful". I've changed that now. Not all comments are helpful. Some simply raise my level of frustration or I totally disagree with or don't see their point in or to their comment. If that is the case now, I don't tick it off as helpful. I don't just go for the ones that are praising my photo I do find negative comments helpful more, sometimes, than the positive! However, I can see Dirt's point here and it IS frustrating. It's akin to an insult to the photographer's intelligence or integrity and I can see Dirt's point and reason for frustration. :) Ahhhh....DPC Challenges....you either have fun or you are ready to put your fist through your screen ;-)

BTW.....here's my score :)

Still dropping..
And the commentors pretty much agree that they don't understand how it's broken. But I expected that would be the case when I posted the picture so I can't complain.

In my opinion this challenge served as a still life study rather than a challenge to produce an image of something that no longer works as it once did. Just plopping down an old watch onto an interesting background and lighting it appropriately, to me, doesn't meet the challenge goal. I'm not targeting a particular image btw. An old rusty car with flat tires in a field of weeds clearly shows that the car isn't in working condition and to me, this meets the challenge theme.

If we're going to over-simplify the challenges then all the challenges will become free studies and pointless.
