I have commented on every picture in the member's challenge. As the title of the thread suggests, hope this becomes a trend for members and maybe non-members as well.

As for the non-member challenge, I will try to do the same although, am not sure it is possible.

Have fun, and good luck to all of you.

Thank you for your effort :) Your comment on my photo was the best one I have received so far :)

Thanks you for your comment on mine (even though you didn't like it). Things like that are good to know too. I have 6 photos left in the current members challenge to comment on. I hope it becomes a trend too, but when the members submissions get up there in the 250's, it will be hard to keep up with them. Next challenge, "motion" lol.

Thank you for understanding; we are all here to learn, after all.

i'm going to try to comment on them all as well. but i'm way behind, because i just had to move.

yeah. real life. whee.

i find comments REALLY helpful sometimes. especially if i know the score. someone this week left me an extensive comment about why they didn't like my pic. they gave me a two. it was the best comment i have ever had.

people, if you HATE the pic, all the more reason to comment.

So does this mean that as a means of motivation, that members' only challenges are now gonna get better topics to work on, and any just ok ideas for challenges are gonna be used for the general challenges?

It didn't take long for the US (members) vs THEM mentality to come about, huh? I'm just wondering why you started with the members challenge. Is this because you didn't enter both or because there were just fewer to do?
Congratulations on all the work you did. I'm sure that a lot of ppl will appreciate it.

Yes, I received your comment. It was a one-word assessment. How is that contributing to a learning process? Perhaps, it is better to offer a constructive reflection or a complete idea? Alternately, perhaps it is better to not comment at all? The gross volume of comments should not be the aspiration, sharing of useful thoughts and ideas should be - this approach contributes to higher learning.

When I intend to comment on a challenge, I try to comment on all (95-100%) of the photos, and be in enough depth to be of use to each photographer. But since I take about 5 mins per photo, doing the large open challenges of 200-300+ has been impossible recently, hence I've so far only commented on the members challenge this week.

I find that comments are always a compromise between time and detail... but hopefully I'll be able to carry on commenting on at least the members challenges for the foreseeable future :o)

I am planning on commenting on all photos at the members challenges, although I'm not always sure what to say, that would really be helpfull, but I will do my best.

You can't necessarily comment on every photo... Sometimes you just don't have anything to say about a particular image. Its really nice to get feedback though, and I appreciate everyone who leaves comments; especially people who make a special effort to comment on the members-only challenges.

Not sure who you were directing your question to, but I'll answer for me. I started with the members challenge for 3 reasons. 1.Less entries 2.I wasn't too fond of the "motion" challenge when it came upin the first place, and am dreading looking at a lot of motion blurr.(not really my thing) and 3. Fewer members, means fewer comments and votes. Members pay to get advice on this site. It would be a little upsetting if it turned out you were paying to get 2 one line comments a week huh?
I think I have all the members photos commented on (I'll check again), and have started on the motion challenge.

basically,

if this site doesnt succeed as a paying proposition, it will go away.

these guys have been running on debt for almost a year now in the hopes of building up a support base so that they can go self-supporting and maybe get paid a little in the process.

if the pay part goes down, the free part will go away too. why? it costs money to run servers, pay for bandwidth, storage, support, etc, not to mention EAT.

therefore, it makes sense to try to make sure those that shelled out get satisfaction, so they will a) keep shelling out, and b) convince others to shell out :).

Because without $, there won't be any members OR users, just a big empty place on the internet where dpc used to be. so if anyone DOES spend more time and energy on the members vs the users, it would make sense -- it's just basic economics :).

That said, I did the member's challenge first because it was smaller, and i enjoyed the novelty and variety of rating a Free Study.

I DID IT!!! I commented on every photo in the members challenge. Oh my! That felt good. More like it did in the "good old days" when challenges only got around 100 entries. I even tried out my own suggestions on 2 photos and posted the results!

I'm sorry to say that I won't be able to rate the open challenge, I just don't have time. As a lot of people know (newish members probably don't), I take art appreciation and critiquing very seriously. Once the challenges got too big I found it too hard to even vote on all of them, and I didn't want to just do 20%. I think my participation from now on will be determined by size. Each week I can handle up to 100 photos. While the member challenges stay small, I'll do those, and if multiple challenges start being offered, I'll pick the smallest one and rate it, open or member, it doesn't matter. I really like giving out lots of comments!

I happened to join this site at a time when I had a lot more time on my hands and commented every single image in the first few challenges which I voted.

I realised once work started coming in that I just don't have that time anymore.

I am delighted that John has started the Critique Club as it gives me the impetus to leave a few in depth comments which I know (from feedback already) prove more valuable than shorter comments which state simply that the commenter likes or dislikes.

That said, when I enter myself I am happy to receive any comment that the commenter has time to leave. Of course if they have time for a proper analysis so much the better but if they don't, the short and sweet "Wow" or "Nice shot" still lift my spirits...

And if the comment you left me is any indication, you left very insightful, helpful comments :) Thanks!!!
