I know, that's a silly question to ask on a photography forum.
I have a Rebel XTi and have owned the Sigma 70-300 f4-5.6 APO Super Macro II since I got my first Rebel five years ago. The Sigma isn't a bad lens (for my purposes and limited budget), but I don't always get the crispest shots when hand holding. I have some Christmas money and B&H gift cards and have been eying up the Canon EF-S 55-250 IS as a replacement. B&H has Canon factory refurbs for $195.
Anyone have/had/used the Canon and wish to share their opinion? Even better if you've also used the Sigma.
The cons I see with going to the Canon? I lose 50mm (I can live with that). I can't use it on my film camera (which I never use). The Sigma has a Macro mode between 200-300mm (2:1...I use that sometimes)
Cons of the Sigma - No IS and it weights 6 ounces more
I'm leaning toward the Canon, but just want to make sure it is of good quality and I won't regret it.

I can't say that I own it, but in case you have not already checked, the reviews at Amazon are overwhlemingly positive. In fact, the lens is the second most popular in Canon lenses (technically #4 in the SLR Camera Lenses category but #2 and #3 are Nikon). #1 is the ever-popular 50mm F/1.8.
For under $200 I can't see how you can really go wrong with it if that focal length suits your needs. |

I have in the past owned a Sigma 70-300, which I replaced with the Canon 70-300 IS (largely to get the IS). I then got the 55-250 IS for its compact size. I use it on a 40D and consider it is a cracking lens for the price. The IS is truly 4 stops-worth. Very small and neat. No problems with AF or IQ.
