Does anyone know of a freeware that would flip photos?

I have software that will rotate the picture but I need something that will flip the image.

I guess the correct term would be to flip the picture horizontally.

I have a bunch of slides that were given to me and they were scanned wrong and I need to flip them around.

MS Paint? Saves JPG in really low quality, though, so you might wanna work with .bmp or .png and convert in another program.

ETA: Use FastStone Image Viewer. It's freeware, and I recommend it for almost anything basic. When you open an image using FSViewer, it opens in full screen. Move the mouse to the left side and you have a pane with the basic options, or you can hit H, V on the keyboard to flip horizontally then vertically. When you move to the next image (left or right arrow) or exit (Escape key), it will ask you if you want to save - click Yes and it will give you a regular Save As dialog box with all sorts of options (including JPEG/PNG/TIFF compression options).

ETA2: You can also batch convert/flip if you have a lot of images. Here's how:
Open up FastStone Image Viewer
Browse to the folder with the images
Select the images you want rotated
Hit F3 or go to Tools -> Batch Convert Selected Images
On the right, choose the format and click Settings for format options (e.g. JPG compression options)
Choose an output folder so it doesn't overwrite your originals
Hit Advanced Options
Go to the Rotate Tab and check "Flip/Rotate"
Check off the ways you want to rotate/flip the image
Hit OK
Hit Convert

I need to try and keep the image quality.

I do have Photoshop elements 6.0 but don't know much about it.

Yes, I need to flip it horizontal. rather then rotating it.

Irfanview will do it and you should be able to do it in batches instead of individually. Just google Irfanview and it will come up with free downloads. Also good for batch resizing.

Also edited my post above with instructions on how to do it in FastStone if you're interested.

You don't need to know much about it... open an image, select Image>Rotate from the menu, and choose "Flip Horizontal". There you have it.

You know, I was going to suggest that too, Fritz you beat me to it. I have never used or even seen PS Elements, But I figured it had to have one of the most basic tools included.

Have you looked in Photoshop elements? If not, I suggest you do. There's a lot in there including flipping an image both horizontal and vertical.

Hi,

I did find a few ways to flip the image horizontally.

However, since I'm not too familiar with all of these family slides I'd like to have a family member do the "flipping".

However, they are not too savvy....They can use the Windows Live Gallery just fine. However, you can only rotate in that software.

Looking to find a simliar software that is used for viewing but also has the ablity to flip it horizontally.

Any ideas??

bump ... Any more thoughts?

I'm still looking but not finding anything...

If they are using a Windows PC (or a Mac running Windows) then IrfanView can flip pictures horizontally, and you can batch-convert a folder of images all at once. I use (an older version) all the time to preview images and to read the EXIF data, but it has a lot of other features as well, such as thumbnail views, slideshow, and various simple editing tools. It's a great little (free) program.

If someone who will not have access to your copy of Elements will be doing the work, then you might try IrfanView. I don't currently have it installed but I am 90% sure it will do what you want.
If whomever will be doing the work can do it on your machine and have access to your copy of Ps Elements, then use my instructions provided above.

You can flip a jpg file using MS Paint. A quick and cheap option, I think.

You've gotten some pretty good guidance here. Several low/no cost options.

My advice ... take the good advice you've received :)

another cheap option that their computer might already have is Microsoft Office Picture Manager. Open the document and click edit picture, click the rotate and flip option then flip how you want it...and if you use the thumbnail view, you can select the images you want and click edit and rotate to ALL of them at once, then save as needed.

If you've got a bunch I'd look into the batch processing but if you're "flipper" isn't very savy (and they have time to kill) use the other methods.

Good luck

glad you found something that works for you...

FWIW, you had by my count about four good suggestions, including one (not mine) that might have already been installed on the machine, yet you didn't provide any feedback on whether those suggestions worked, didn't work, or ??
It's no wonder that one poster pointedly suggested you try some of that advice, since you asked for it.

They worked... just was not a very good flow considering how many I had to "flip". PhotoScape fit the bill and I was done in no time!
