How will DPC decide which is easier? A variety of people feel comfortable in a variety of fields. While I might be very challenged by a particular topic, it may fall right into the 'comfort zone' of another. Leaving it open to 2 topics still gets the creative juices following.

It is a challenge, to get you out of your comfort zone, not to keep you in it. If you want to learn, as so many claim to be the reason why they are here, than giving an opt-out with a 2nd choice is not the way to push them to learn an uncomfortable or difficult subject.

I think your premise is flawed. You can't force someone out of their comfort zone......only they can decide whether or not they want to push themselves. If you take one of the choices away, then perhaps the photog will simply not enter at all. Do that enough, and maybe he/she will wander away entirely.

I like the good/bad, white/black, fast/slow, yin/yang style of choices that the open challenges offer.

I puch myself some weeks because I'm inspired and full of energy, some weeks I choose the easy way out, some weeks I pout and decide that they picked two topics just to ruin my day, and don't enter at all.

It's all good! LOL!!!

But DPC seems to have a high intake of people who are new to photography and come to the site to learn and be challenged. Somewhere like 1X is what you want for a ton of beautiful photos.

Yeah, but with 1x, what's the percentage of images submitted to published?

It's a debilitating site to try and get accepted to if you're not seriously top-flight, and there is a definite style that makes it.

"Regular" stellar images don't make it......for the most part, the artistic and outré are what that site is looking for......not what would do well here.

In many cases the balance is way off, like 33% vs 66% and 25% vs 75% distributions. I claim that people opt for the easiest way out. When the two options are equally difficult, you come to a 50/50 participation.

The easiest way out doesn't push people to creatively give their best, to learn.

Also, in my very humble opinion, a participation level for a challenge of 31, around 60-70 and even below 100 basically erodes the worth of a ribbon. What is more satisfying and what is more a showcase of your ability? A win in a challenge with 31 participants or one with 189?
This does not say however that the ribbon winners in low participation challenges suck. The field is only so small that there is almost no competition and I am not sure if you should be happy with that.

My point is, that participants, if they really want to learn and grow, are better of with one subject that they have to delve into and not an option to take the easy route because the other stuff is out of their comfort zone and psychological league.

You're saying that we all take the easy way out. I think that's wrong. Your assumptions are merely that, assumptions. They may only be true in your case and not anyone else's. I mostly choose the challenge I can realistically do well in according to my skill. I don't do landscapes so I pick the other one. I don't do people pictures, so I'll choose the other. Some people have the equipment needed for macro-photography, some are equipped for portraiture and yet some are equipped for candid photography. All require different equipment. Maybe some here choose a certain challenge due to their equipment and not their comfort zone. Have you thought about that?

This site is a place to learn but mostly it's a place to participate in what we like to do, take photos and post them for the site's users to see and maybe comment on. I don't come here to be forced into thinking a certain way by only getting a specific type of challenge to work with and frankly, if that were the case I would most probably leave. I don't want to go to school when coming here, all I want is to enjoy the site's many qualities and participate, that's it. I also want more challenges, not less.

Keep the ones we have now but add a Wed. or Thur. one too. Too much time between Tue. and Sun. so a challenge between the two would be nice. Like this week.
