I did 3 this year.

One benefitting the friends of the animal shelter (different types of animals inside):

One of Irish Wolfhounds (I'm a wee bit obsessed by them), and one of various wild flora from northern Virginia.

This is the second year I've used Lulu.com for creating and selling calendars. I've been very pleased with the quality of their work and their customer service.

The design of the front cover of the FFCS calender is great and the guinea pigs are adorable:-)

The Irish Wolfhound one - those dogs have such a majestic and imposing quality. Never truly understood how truly formidible they would be as a friend at your side in and out of battle when reading stories about Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool) and the Fianna until I actually saw a wolfhound getting groomed at a Petsmart.

***Mary, it looks like you could offer more calendar designs at LuLu yes? Generally been happy with Cafepress quality and service, but one drawback is that they only let you design one wall calendar at a time.

Took a stroll through the calendar. Wow! January an April the lines of some of those fireworks takes on the appearance of warp speed forward and really draws the eye in. March and May are two others that really stand out from your fabulous shots; spectacular to look at.

Well it certainly can't be from a picture point of view looking through your gallery...might be that you do not have enough but I am sure there is stuff you have not posted that could work really well with the suggestion below.

You can do as many as your little heart desires ;-) Some of the layouts (like the one I used for the IW calendar) frame your images, so you can use portrait orientation shots even though the calendar is landscape overall. You can also pick layouts that display more than one image at a time on a page. Design your own cover or just specify an image and text in one of their layouts. Pretty flexible.

Another plus: starting tomorrow Lulu is listing all 3 of my calenders on Amazon's marketplace, at no cost to me. Free advertising!!

I did four different ones, all with Shutterfly. I'd love to say they did a good job, but I haven't seen any of them. I ordered a sample of each at the beginning of November so I could proof them - I still haven't seen those. Getting to be a time crunch, so I ordered all of the ones I had planned for gifts (about 20 or so) and I STILL haven't seen the ones I've had sent here. There are people in the US who have received them directly. I'd love to see one. :-(

As of now, I cannot recommend Shutterfly for shipping to APO addresses. Very disappointing. I am now trying to reorder the gifts for people here and have them sent to a German address, which will take about a month, I'm told. I will probably be gone when they arrive.

My problem isn't so much the material as it is the layout...a couple of years ago I did a calendar (the year my mother passed away) for my family (all 54 of us - and yes that is immediate family). What I had done was to either take pictures of all the family members, glean them from their pictures and/or scan some very old ones of mine into the computer. what I liked about that company (Shutterfly) was that I could do all kinds of collages (so far I haven't found that ability yet with most of the calendar companies).

What I didn't like was the choice of paper designs. I haven't found one yet that is "wow, that's it"...I might just go with a plain vanilla one (one color) as I just don't like some of the multiple loud choices that most of the companies have...Kodak has one thing that I haven't seen on other calendars is that the same choice of paper that you have on the top is printed on the bottom of the calendar...that is kind of nice...I need to get on the stick with this and get this done...

Melenthia call shutterfly back and complain to them about how long this is taking...they should DO SOMETHING...when I ordered from them they were very helpful because I wanted to hand the calendars out at my Mother's funeral so that everyone would have one with our birthdays and pictures on the same pages...I think they all loved it as (for me) it kept us connected each month of the year. ANYWAY...the quality of shutterfly was totally good. I will be anxious to hear how it turned out...

Yeah, I wanna see how they turn out, too.

I've re-ordered as of today, to be sent to a German address, and have asked that they investigate fast shipping methods even though it will cost me more.

What they did when I first complained was offer to do a re-order but said "our lab tells us a shipment to an APO address might not arrive" - but this was after I'd placed the second full order with shipment again to my APO address. So when I got THAT bit of news, I asked that they look into my big order (over $200) and was told "please wait until December 8th to see if they arrive". Well nothing was any different from that first order (placed the first week of November, and still not here) to the second, so the waiting an extra 7-10 days to reorder didn't do me any good at all.

that's to bad...cause my experience with them was really good...they really helped to expedite the calendars so I would have them at the funeral...I had started working on them in the hospital with my mother because I had the pictures and she could give them to the families from her...it was a good gift from her so they really did help me alot

Great thread! This sounds like fun, and could make a great gift too (probably a tad late for Christmas?).

Ugh! The kettle would be boiling red at this point if I was in your shoes. Sorry to hear about the troubles you have been going through Deb. You might want to document all the dates and then fire off a curt business "not pleased with your services" letter to the CEO or some higher ups - sometimes it gets results or even a deep discount for the trouble the company caused.

ok, getting something started...picked my pictures - starting to think this through...and guess what - I have to upload their software to get the pictures on so I can work with them...

here's my problem...we've really had problems with some of these uploads of software of late...have any of you had any problems with these companies that you know of...(I am looking to use Kodak for the calendar...I don't need any of their editing software so all I need is the upload stuff...) my husband is forever deep breathing when he finds I've added something else....yet again...

Im usually hesitant about installing software like that too and was pleasantly surprised that vistaprint was completely done online. I ordered a few from there and they should be here Friday according to the tracking info.

Im not vouching for vistaprint just saying it was nice not to have to install another application to submit photos to a print house...

ok, let me tell you about one other thing that makes me hesitate....when my (our) daughter got married 2 years ago...right when I had gotten this camera, I was using Picasa and THEY posted my photographs on the internet without my knowledge or permission...so basically my daughters whole wedding (and many of my grandnieces/nephews) all on there...I didn't like that at all so therefore I canceled and removed my pictures from their site...I was outraged that they did that...what was the point of having a password if it was to be a "public" site!! deep breath...

so you can see my hesitation of using ANY site...I've read (actually word for word) their policies and don't see anything wrong...I want to do this...so I guess this is the only way...

oh, and I will ck out the VistaPrints too...

I have been doing calendars through Cafepress since 2006 - only once did I have a problem with the printing of one of the pictures in the calendar. Contacted Cafepress and worked it out that it was a printing problem and they sent me a new calendar free of charge.

I don't remember if we had to download anything - I don't think we did. All I did was follow the guidelines of appropriate pixel size to get the best resolution.

And I can see why you are hesitant to pull the trigger on this given your experience with Picasa in the post above. However your careful scrutiny of TOS, policies, and whatever checkbox choices (public or private) a company has when uploading content will serve you well.

BTW if you do not want to offer the calendar to the greater public and it is only for personal use (or a small number of gifts) you could go to FED EX/Kinko's where they print the calendars for you. Only thing is I don't know what paper they use and the long term level of quality is. Just another option available to you.

Pretty much at this point I have gone to Costco.com...their calendars are $9.99 (8 1/2 x 11) and they have several choices for paper and YOU can choose the order of print and if you want to you can repeat a pattern. (which I really like) I can add birthdays/events to any page WITH pictures of those events on that date on the calendar. And the calender part (bottom of the page) has a colored border just like the top not that blaring white that most of them have. And I have an account with them already (oh, and as a footnote...their mouse pads are really cool and they are very cheep ($3.99)...I'm going to order a new one).

The only thing that I have struggled with is what size pictures/resolution to upload....of course everything that I have on DPC is the wrong size and I have to go back and resize...lesson learned here...make copies during the year and upload them into a separate file for next year's calender.

So I'm off to re-edit my year...yea.....

My March Free Study entry was a picture of one of our cancer survivor calendar girls.

She ended up being April, not November.

Our project benefits the local Susan G. Komen foundation. Our calendar features 12 local breast cancer survivors. It has their stories on the calendar and the accompanying website.

One of the goals of the calendar was to provide breast cancer prevention\awareness tips to the community. More than $12 of the proceeds from each calendar is going directly to the Susan G. Komen foundation. If we sell all of the calendars that were printed, we'll donate a over $35,000 to find a cure for breast cancer.

Hopefully, we'll be able to do a cancer survivors manual\calendar annually.

You can purchase this calendar on Ebay or at the main calendar site.

Shutterfly has re-ordered my order. Twice, it appears. I hesitated to even tell them that, for fear they'll cancel both of them. I did tell them, but have not heard back. Nor have I heard back from my letter I sent to customer service about their apparent inability to send to APO addresses and wondering how they will handle that in the future.

The re-order is due to arrive here after January 4th, and is being sent to a German address. So much for Christmas presents. :-( I'm leaving the country on the 17th. I just hope they get here before that.

ok, I am ready to kill something...I have been working on this calendar for days now (of course all the beautiful edited pictures that I have used in the past I can't use as their size is to small, so I've been re-editing pictures...sigh)...I'm almost done, but I am having trouble with a couple of pictures....the size...if I choose a page and want either 1 or 2 pictures on it...the size that I have been using 1050 x ??? isn't large enough, nor is 2000 x ???, and I'm tired of guessing. I am at the point that when I go back to the picture I'm basically at the original size (JPEG - older picture of mine). So when I TRY to save for web at the "full" size PS says it's to large...what magic size are you using for your pages (I have the "normal" size for the calendar, not the really big one)

I know that someone out there can help me...please...
12/13/2009 01:08:42 AM · #25
Janine, most of those "full pages" will be about 11 inches across, maybe 12 inches. Assuming you're not bleeding from edge to edge, an 8x10 at 300 dpi is 3000 pixels on the 10 inch side. That should be sufficient for a normal sized calendar, I'd think. Should be a meg or two in jpeg format.
