Wow. I've only had a quick glance at the thumbnails and already I know this weeks votes will be really hard. Congratulations to all of you for coming up with what looks like some really creative work. I can see that I am going to have to spend some time checking this lot out. Good work people, keep it up ;-)

I was quite impressed myself. Good batch of photos this week.

I am actually doubly happy. After the first 8 votes I was at 4.5. I am now at 5.7! Some of the first voters must not have liked my subject. I have cracked 5 by 12 votes, which means the last four votes must have averaged 8 (if I did my math right)

I¡¦m in last place so far¡K..I am getting many comments about not being able to see ¡§transparency¡¨
Does this mean they don¡¦t realize how it was done? Or they don¡¦t think of ¡§transparency¡¨ when they are looking at this? Hmmm ¡V O well ¡V somebody has to fill the last place spot¡K.. ¼

Ditto -- I looked through the thumbnails last night and was amazed at the consistently high quality. I was guessing I might break 6 for the first time (about 5.4 now) but maybe not if people vote in comparison with the other photos. I know we're supposed to rate each photo on is own, but I think actual human beings unavoidably consider previous scores given (at lest a little). It will be interesting to compare the average score in this challenge with the last one (I think about 5.2).

I agree as well.. there are some excellent photos this week for sure :) I have seen quite a few really nice submissions... Kudos :)

I figured this would be a wild ride, so far I am hanging in the 5.? range. With the number of entrys I am real happy. There are a lot of good shots with some real effort applied. Great job to all.

This is the first time I had three submissions to choose from. All three were completely different. My outtakes are in my Xtras. There was one, however, that is too much like another that someone else submitted, so now I'm glad I didn't pick that one....

karen, both your outtakes would've scored very high with me. the composition and execution is excellend for each. can't wait to see what you actually submitted.

Karen, I love both of your outtakes. I really love the crop of 'veil' where it just shows the veil and her mouth -- was your shot taken at high enough resolution to allow you to submit that crop? Citrus is also amazing. I was planning on going to the grocery store to play with different fruits/vegetables, but well, that just didn't happen :)

Agreed..they would have scored high with me as well..I love the Citrus especially..that's beautiful. I can't wait to see which one you did submit!

Excellent pictures and so vastly different.

Dare I say it? The citrus are... sublime

Karen - really nice work. Just out of curiosity, how did you do the lighting on "Citrus"?
07/01/2002 04:31:33 PM · #14
Wow! I'm honored! Now I'm bummin' that I submitted the third choice! Well. Critique is good even if not in the challenge!
Thanks, gr8!
Drew: It was a full shot, not cropped, of the veil photo... but I decided against it because of the way the texture of the veil makes it look digitized because it's a close up. My daughter and I had fun with it anyway! I was going to submit Citrus - actually almost changed to that one at 11:45 PM!!
Thanks, too, Karen and Crisa!
Kimbly: I put the thin slices of limes on a light box, added a light from the top, and photo'd at F4 at speed 50. Then, a bit of adjustments and cropping in Photoshop LE.

Man, I am just now really looking at the transparency entries...these are really, really good! I think the collective talent and creativity of the members of this site continues to rise. Great job, everyone!

I am taking more time than usual to vote this week. Sometimes comments can be a little time consuming, but worth it. They are all really great.

QUESTION: Is the trend sort of - the better the picture, the less comments and the lesser quality photos get more comments? Just curious.
07/01/2002 10:00:14 PM · #17
Actually, it seems that pictures in the middle get the fewest comments. The most seem to actually go to the highest scorers and the lowest. Don't hold me to that as gospel, I haven't looked closely at all the scores, but I have noticed that my pics in the middle only get a few comments, while my bad ones get a lot (some are useful *wink*). I haven't had any really good ones, so I don't know about that.

Eeek! There's too many good and great images. I can't choose!. I wan't to give 3/4s of them a 9 or 10 and 5 to the rest. *pout*

I was actually suprised by the number of outstanding entries!

All week long I was absolutely stumped for a single original idea, thinking the challenge to be a tad too difficult. But going over some of the submissions, I've guessed I've learned never to underestimate human creativity. There are quite a few entries that simply knocked my socks off...

So do it -- there's nothing that says you couldn't give everybody a 10. This is set up to allow you to judge each entry individually. You don't have to pick a winner, 2nd place, 3rd place, etc.

I would LOVE to think every image in a challenge was worthy of a 10 -- if I did, I'd give it to 'em all.

Thanks, Patella. You beat me to it.
Maybe that is what is going on here? Are people voting by ranking them against each other on their own? Aren't the averaged scores supposed to do that? Patella is right, each photo should be looked at as if it were the only one there. (Did I phrase this right?)

I'm afraid if mine was the only picture in the contest this challenge.... I would still take last place.

It happens both ways... I have heard several here speak of choosing the winner by voting it with their only 10 for the week. The voting guidelines on this site don't specify *any* criteria for voting. Since everyone uses different ideas behind their voting, it's really hard to tell.

I vote each photo individually. I am also impressed with the photos that we have before us this week. There are several really incredible shots and quite a few exceptional shots also. I am impressed :)

True. But it's awfully hard to do that unless there is some sort of 'objective' criteria. Like in figure skating or diving when they say "this starts at a 9 for difficulty, you get 4.5 points for technical merit (not screwing up) and 4.5 points for artistic merit (making it look interesting). It would be nice if people could give up to 5 points on technical stuff and up to 5 points for artistic stuff, but that's probably too much thinking for most people :-) Most people, including myself, find it easier to think "I like this better than that, so I'll give it a higher score" - and it doesn't really make any difference except in terms of raw scores anyways, does it?

I admit I vote photos against each other. To a degree.

Half of my vote is based purely on what the photos says to me on its own. 25% is what the photo does technically and for the challenge and 25% comes from comparison to others in the challenge. For me, anything I vote an 8 is pretty damn good to me and then to get a 9 or a 10 is extra. But this is all subject to change in an instant based on caffeine and sugar levels:-)

If you think about it..every vote you ever give is a comparison vote. A comparison against your life experience, your personal preferences, etc Why not vote photos against each other here..all the same really.
