For those that have either or both of the above lenses could you please let me know your thoughts on the sharpness of these lenses wide open.

How sharp is the 24-105 at f4 all the way through the range?
Sharp, Very Sharp, Really Sharp

How sharp is the 17-55 at f2.8 all the way through the range?
Sharp, Very Sharp, Really Sharp

Would the 17-55 be sharper than the 24-105 at f4 all the way through the range?

Thanks

Hmmm...can't really speak for the clarity of the 17-55, but The 24-105 that I use is excellent! Also, you get quite a range of focal lengths for a general purpose lens.

The 24-105 is one of the sharpest zooms I've ever used.

I haven't used the 17-55, but there are a few critical differences even if the sharpness is the same.

The 24-105 is an "L" series lens. These are Canon highest quality lenses for optics, build, and weather sealing.

The 17-55 is and EF-S lens which means it will only work on the APS-C series cameras, the Rebel line and the 2 digit D line (30D, 40D, 50D, etc.)

The 24-105 will work on all Canon EOS cameras

i have the 17-55 and love it, the sharpness is fantastic. I think they are as sharp as each other, I've looked at 100% crops and a couple of tests and there seems nothing to separate them, the 24 is better weather sealed and has a longer reach and will work full frame, the 17 is wider and has a better IS and is f/2.8 rather than f/4.
Personally I was looking at the same choice and went for the 17 as i wanted wider angle and f/2.8

Agreed! The L has better weather proofing as well. If you wanted the f2.8, and less focal length you could go for the 24-70L. It doesn't have IS, but from what my friends say, it's a wicked lens as well.

I cant comment on the 24-105 but if it helps I have recently had two different 24-70mm 2.8L lenses on my camera and compared them with my 17-55. Surprisingly the 17-55 took sharper, higher contrast pictures. And trust me, in the start I really wanted to keep a 24-70, but I couldn't justify it with the results I produced. IMO if you are not going to be in the rain go with the 17-55

personally I think the 17-55 is a much better lens than the 24-70, just my opinion

all the tests I looked at suggested that too. I've used the 17-55 in an icelandic storm and it survived!!

I went with the 17-55 over the 24-105 for the extra stop and the wider angle on my 50D. I haven't shot with the latter but my 17-55 is definitely sharp wide open throughout the focal range. Really pleased with it.

Incidentally, the rumour is that the only reason it is not an 'L' is because it is EF-S. It certainly costs enough! Even canon say that it has the same grade of glass.
