I'm not in this one, but I just did a round of voting.

You have rated 51 of 78 images (65%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 26 images (33%) in this challenge.
You have given an average score of 6.0000.

There were a lot of entries that struck me as being dots or spots or circles, but not polka dots. (I left explanatory comments on those, since I hate when it happens to me without being told why) I am going to go read up on the concept and if I am wrong, I will be raising some votes.

FYI Wikipedia writes "Polka dot is a pattern consisting of a series of dots that are equally spaced and sized......." and it goes on and on.

I did read it right after my last post. Thank you for the excerpt, however. After reading it, I still think a lot of the entries don't really seem to fit the description. Don't concern yourselves much, my "troll" votes were 4's and 5's.

You will be proud of me, I shoe-horned mine in like a MoFo.

I'm very proud of you, but I hope you don't kiss your wife with that mouth.

here's wishing an irregularly-spaced pox upon anal voters ;-)

I'm not measuring them for spacing.

Thanks skewsme, for voicing my sentiments upon all the trolls and otherwise anal-retentive voters. Maalox, anyone?

OWWW! Guess someone got offended by the Maalox suggestion. Never fear, a case is on the way.

mine doesn't follow the perfect spacing required by polka dots :/ I suppose that's why it's doing so poorly... Perhaps I shouldn't have posted it to this contest, but I wanted to post it somewhere that would give useful critiques
11/30/2009 09:55:25 PM · #43
Yo Spiff was correct in his initial posting that there are a lot of images that really aren't considered Polka Dots. He didn't say that he was basing his comments and votes on the spacing of the dots etc. He said that if you are trying (and some poorly IMO) to pass something else off as polka dots and shoe horning an entry then his comments will reflect that, and I agree with him.

We all should know what polka dots look like, and if you couldn't find something to fit the challenge criteria then you should have sat this one out. If the challenge was about photographing "Dots" then most would fit the bill. When you add the criteria of being Polka Dots then people should stop complaining about the "anal voters" and enter a submission that fits the challenge. When voters come to this site they are smart enough to read the challenge description so stop bashing people who expect the challenge to be followed and making it seem like there is something wrong with them. If you want to be creative enter the free study and skip the challenges otherwise deal with the fact that their are people who try hard to meet the criteria and everyone should leave the shoe horns in the dresser draw. It gets real old when you have a challenge that says shoot something that is only the color blue...and something with the color red scores higher or ribbons. That's not the purpose of challenges so again stop bashing those that go out of their way to fit the criteria.

Trollish, for sure.

You haven't run across my collection of shoehorn entries yet, have you? I haven't done one for a while now. Perhaps inspiration will strike again soon and then K10 can laugh.

I'd like to point out the description for the challenge ask us to be creative.

"Include the polka dotted pattern in your photograph some how. Be creative!"

Actually we are about the same age, but I learned a long time ago that there are rules and criteria to competition. No one is bashing you so I suggest that you keep your flames to yourself. I was defending Steve's post in addition to expressing my view point. You don't have to agree with it, but if you're going to post replies such as you did than perhaps you need to follow your own advice.

Yes, be creative....by using the polka dot pattern.

Actually, I feel strongly both ways. There are definitely people who take shots that just do not meet the challenge, and it is irritating when one of those scores higher than someone who's really trying to follow the rules.

HOWEVER...

There are a few people who take a shot that, on first glance really doesn't meet the challenge. But the more you look at it, you suddenly start thinking just how brilliant it is. How you never would have considered something like that until they showed you the way. These are the artists. The ones that can take photography and make it into something special, something that goes beyond a simple catalog of life.

If we have to put up with shoehorns that aren't clever, creative or funny so we can also get these spectacular shots, I think we can live with it!

btw, my score has dropped as well, and it's definitely a "by the book" polka shot. So perhaps we just have had harsh voters. Hopefully we'll get some happy voters back. I was liking the 6.3s, but I haven't seen anything like it in a little while now.
