Was out in the work shed this evening and came up with some ideas. So I was just wondering how many of you have an old tripod just hanging around? Not because it is working for one reason or another, but because you always thought you had a use for it or just couldn't throw it away?

I came up with a contraption (key word: contraption) that just may breathe new life into your old tripod as a DIY project. So really just curious how many photographers keep old tripods.

I've got a terrible old Slik I think it is. I've used it as a lightstand relatively recently though. I don't know that I would ever throw it away. I'd probably try and find somebody I could give it to, if it ever came to that.

I've got an old 40 pound Albinar that I use to break car windows when I need to.......the lock screw for the height of the top piece tore out, but the tripod part works.

It's actually usable, but limited in use and it has to be pretty level.

I have 2 tripods. My "best" is a Sunpack (LOL). My spare is an aluminum Sears model that I got along with a Sears 28-85mm zoom lens for my Minolta X-700 film camera 25 years ago. I keep that tripod in the trunk of my car so I have it in case of an impromptu shoot at lunch or after work. I still have the Minolta and Sears lens also!

Phew... I'm glad that wasn't your first thought when I locked my keys in the car at Rickett's Glen...

I have one made by Orion from the 70s. It's awesome. Weighs a ton, has big spiky handles/levers coming out and once it's up, it stays up.

I got a modern one because the lever things jab into my legs, back and arms when its over the shoulder...

I have a tripod from the early 1930's from my Great Grandpa. Built like a rock.

I have 4 tripods (well, 6 if you count the lightweight ones that only get used for lights or the mini-camcorder). The oldest belonged to my dad. He had it for years, and i've had it since he died in 1991. It's a heavy beast of a Manfrotto/Bogen.

C'mmon CEJ, you're going to have to let us in to the secrets of your DIY project...

I inherited a tripod that had a leg that didn't like to stay up. After I bought a new one, my husband uses the old one for his tape measure (it has the lasers that project on the wall). Everyone is happy. :)

The success of the project will be determined tonight when I lock myself in the shed again after dark. I have all the pieces cut out and drilled and assembly will be attempted tonight. If all goes well I will take a picture of the creation.
