I just went through the challenge and I gotta agree. America seems to be full of pain, suffering and all about war. Quite depressing

Not suprised. After all, USA paticipated almost every wars in 20th century and she is still in war now.

By the way, I wanted to shoot a photo titled "USA: The Heaven Of Capitalism" but had no time to do it.

The images that are portrayed in this challenge DO NOT glorify war. They portray the selfless valor of the men and women who have sometimes paid the ultimate price for our freedoms. We take our freedom for granted. But without their sacrifice where would we be. When I first was travelling, during the Reagan years, I would sometimes be accosted for my country's policies by younger people. The older ones always expressed love for America because our liberation of their countries from Fascism and Japanese Imperialism. The people of Australia and New Zealand knew what their fate would be if the US armed forces didn't stop the Japanese. Now of course there have been stupid and pointless wars of greed, Iraq and Afghanistan, as 2 examples. But we must seperate the political realities from the human drama. The spirit of our country is exemplified by those who serve. They should be honored. Those who scorn them or their service should stand in shame.

I must admit I was also surprised by the number of war grave type shots. I admire anyone who has served in the armed forces, but when I think of a Spirit of a Country, I was hoping to see some more optimism. Oh well, I am voting on the quality of the photography anyway.

Well said. I think the entries with military themes depict the selflessness and raw courage our young men and women in uniform display on a daily basis.

Mine has risen from the initial drop. Very nicely. In fact, it is considerably higher than I expected. Much higher. By a lot. I'll post the score after rollover. :-)

You may be right about WW1 and WW2 but for all other wars your speech is irrelevant. You want honour, don't kill innocent people.

You do realize that the enemy has the same thoughts as you do and thinks killing you is honourable.

Only poor young men and women die in wars. If they were not poor they wouldn't sign up for active duty so in keeping them poor you do not have to implement a draft. Same thing but implemented in different ways.
