Have a pop-up copyright notice appear upon first login (maybe even with a "more info" FAQ link explaining that just because a photo is on the internet does not make it free). That way, the regulars would get a clean viewing experience, and a thief would at least have to register AND ignore a warning to swipe a clean image.

Another thing to consider though is that non-thieves would have to register, too. I often post images for family and friends to enjoy, including providing links from my facebook page, but I don't think many of them would want to register. (Some friends, huh?)

Ohfercryinoutloud. Photographers like Skip have been putting watermarks on their portfolio images for years with nary a complaint, but offer members an official way to do that and you'd think it's the end of the world. I'm sure any solution would, at the very least, be optional and still allow for watermark-free voting. I seriously doubt Langdon would force watermarks on anyone or opt to deface the user experience during regular challenge functions, and nobody's going to stop you from posting a clean image or sharing it with others if you want to. You can avoid the current GIF overlay lock by putting the photo in your Workshop folder or uploading a size beyond 800px.

We get it, there is more than one way to do it, and if someone is resolute enough, they will get it if they want it. But most of the measures that are being implemented/discussed are deterrents. They might just be enough to prevent someone from "casually" lifting your image. No matter what, if its online, there is a risk of someone using it for thier own purposes, but bottom line is that a simple measure may be enough of a deterrent.

People who are casually lifting your image are not the ones who usually try to gain a commercial or ego advantage with it. In the early days of DPC I used to take many images to a special folder on my HD, so I could study them offline.

I keep pointing out a thousand ways, because if I would want to make money with your photos I would not let a gif layer or right click stop me. You only annoy the hell out of the people who have no false intentions.

Well be clear for cryingoutloudthen...

Is there an intention to put a DPC logo on every challenge photo?
Or is this a portfolio opt-in only?

Because if it is the latter, all people here can easily do it themselves however and wherever they want already. And if it includes the first, I am absolutely in all ways opposite to it.

That's all I want, clarity. The poll that is running right now is hardly clear. It explains NOTHING. It's a pure, reactionary piece of fluff.

A point worth considering is that the more times someone can "casually lift" your image, the more places it ends up. This increases the number of unprotected places that your photo is put out there. If taking steps to stop the casual lifting here at DPC works, then that could lower the number of chances for someone that would use it for something else can see it.

The poll states:

Do you want DPChallenge to initiate some form of watermarking for photo protection?
Yes
No

with no mention of what should be a default of a choice.

maybe once we decide if we want the watermarking or not, there will be another poll to determine if it is opt in/out, or mandatory for all challenge entries and not portfolio images, etc.. then we'll have one to determine the size and style to make sure its pleasing to the eye. then maybe a final one to see if paid members should get a different type of watermark than registered users...

;)

I already said that yesterday. Langdon told me this was only intended to gauge interest in exploring watermark solutions of some kind— nothing more. There is no mention of defaults because that's a separate discussion. Any notion of where they would appear, and in what form, is unfounded speculation.

There you go, jumping into contempt mode when someone raises concerns or questions. I for one am just trying to look at the pros and cons of the issue.

And where was this made clear, besides what you've said in one forum thread that not everyone is going to be reading? No official statement, no wording to suggest such on the poll, not even an option like, "Maybe, depending on the implementation" or anything.

You always tend to take this stance that everyone should just automatically assume (or know) things that you yourself are privy to knowing, and it's kind of more than a little bit irritating. Even just a little, "Ok, I'm hearing your suggestions and will bring them up with Langdon, thank you." would go a long way.

I want the option of watermarking my challenge entries. That's all.

I have that option on every other image I post to this site. Why not have it for challenge entries that go into a site-permanent database?

Ideally, the watermark would be applied:
1. only after the challenge voting was complete
2. at the option of the site member
3. automatically by the site
4. determined on an image-by-image basis by the owner of the image
5. at any time

I don't care if I'm stupid, naive, misguided, paranoid, un-savvy or even silly in my desire. I won't even promise to use a feature if it were implemented. I just want the option.

It shouldn't be called a "poll". It should be a "survey".

A survey allows for more information and communication between the surveyors and the surveyees. How about something along the lines of:

- Are you concerned with theft of photographs from DPC?

- Would you be willing to explore various optional watermarking strategies?

- In 25 words or less, what would you suggest to help thwart image theft?

I asked Langdon to include a third, conditional option in the poll for this very reason, but he chose not to and I tried to clarify the intent here. No good deed goes unpunished, I guess.

Giving the SC a hard time is the reason for our very existence ;)

Here here!

I assumed that the expert wording of the poll was clear enough that only a Yes or No option were necessary. The poll was merely put forth to get a collective "Yes, let's do SOMETHING", or a "No, it's probably not a good use of time". It looks like the majority want something done, so we will move forward on figuring out exactly what that is.

As a side note, I personally do not want to browse the challenge results and see watermarks on all the wonderful photography you guys create, but I can respect that a lot of you want to protect your work and I'm sure we can strike a happy medium.

I like these and would like one more added:

Have you ever officially registered any of your photos with the US, or other copyright office?
YES/NO show percentage

Hmm...

Imagine that.

Imagine that you didn't include his entire quote !!!! LOL.... I guess this would be the part you felt was NOT IMPORTANT...

Now, if he can respect that, and you seem to value at least a portion of his opinion, why can't you ????? And, why can't there be a "happy medium"...? just curious.

Kind of an over hyped thing. While it is important for collecting damages if it goes to court, your image is covered by copyright the moment the shutter is pushed. Not to mention you can always go in after the fact and register it, even after you've found it being used else where.

Just grabbed the winning beer image that way. BTW it looks much better in the black background of my viewer than the blah gray of the website.
That is one smooth image. Wish I could have voted on that one.
