So...my 10d is dead. I am looking at purchasing a 50D, but I have one question remaining. Should I replace my crappy old Sigma 18-50mm f/3.5 with the Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM kit lens.

The reason I still have the sigma is because I don't use that range very often. Most my pictures tend to be macro or telephoto. I have not been particularly happy with the sigma, it was mostly a very cheap short term solution I needed at the time. But with looking at purchasing a new camera, I am wondering if I should fork out the extra $200 to get the lens too.

What do you think? How much better would the canon lens I mentioned above be over an old sigma 18-50? Would you fork out the $200 for the canon lens or just pay for a really good lens when the need arises. Thanks

I was just about to reply to this, but checked your profile and it seems like you already decided! Good choice - this was my first non-kit lens and I still love it. (Sadly) so does my wife, and it spends most of its time on her camera!! ;o)

Ya, the lens ended up being night and day better than my old sigma. Sadly this lens is still not as sharp as I hoped for when it is wide open. But if you can stop it down a bit, it seems to work pretty well, I was impressed.

FWIW, the same could be said of the 18-55mm IS USM. Not as sharp as you would like, but still very useful stopped down to f/8 or so.

A friend of mine got one with his 500D and I really enjoyed using it. Some great results came out of it at f/5.6-f/8 in a variety of lighting conditions. It compared quite favorably with the Tammy 17-50 f/2.8 I have. The Tammy is still way more versatile, especially for moving subjects in low light, but when I was doing some shots dragging the shutter with some girls doing a big dance number on a stage, I wanted a slow shutter speed, but I still wanted the floor to look sharp and clean. The IS USM kit lens did that better when I was holding my breath for 1/4 second exposures.

Lots o fun. And dirt cheap.
