Or will I be eaten alive? I love this photo but don't really think anyone else will. I have a boring backup...technically sound (I think). How do abstracts fair?

I thought of the same thing. I had a few that were pretty abstract, and well, I think that the one I chose is a little abstract. I think abstract is great - especially with this week's challenge. I guess as long as it meets the challenge. Besides, if you love it, then that is what really counts. Go for it!

Go for it Lisa, after all, whats the worst possible scenario. You may get a few bad comments but on the other hand you may get a few good ones. You will never know if you don't submit it. Besides, I think that this challenge in particular lends itself to the more abstract side of our creativity. I spent all week looking for a subject and although I'm happy with the outcome, others may feel differently. At the end of the day, who cares. Whilst I enjoy getting the feedback, I don't take photos to please other people. I take them because I enjoy it.This site allows me to show my photos off and learn (via comments) good tips and tricks to improve them. Enjoy:-)

Well, it takes time and experience with the challenges to work out what you want to get out of them. I began with photos I really liked, but found I was disappointed when I got low scores, so without really thinking about it consciously I started trying to guess what would rate better. That didn't work at all! Now I've gone back to pleasing myself, and my photo this week is around 5.25, my highest score ever, with lots of great comments :). I don't know if my transparency submission will do that well, but I'm over questioning what the voters will or won't like, and only care about pleasing myself. It's easy to say that, but it's only when you've tested things out around here that you *know* it.

So submit your photo if you're curious to see how it will go, and if you're disappointed then try something else for the next challenge, and just plough on. But don't ever fall into the trap of taking it all too seriously :)

I'm glad to hear there may be other abstract images in the challenge. I guess I'll stick my neck out and submit mine. It will be fun/interesting to see how it's received. Maybe I'll even get an authentic Melzymel '?'

Thanks for the encouragement. Can't wait 'til Monday morning.

Great! Now you'll be hooked like all the rest of us, checking back every 10 minutes to see how your score's going:) It's interesting and informative (usually) to read the comments, but when the day is done, the only person you have to satisfy is yourself. Good luck.

Oh, I''m not knocking Melzymel. I think her pov is interesting/valuable and she cracks me up with her bluntness. I wish she''d join the game (submitting photos). I bet she''d come up with some pretty good photos. :)

If you want to submit an abstract photo, make sure it is technically sound. The same applies to humorous takes on the challenge. I know, I've found out the hard way. :-)

I personally kinda like the abstract stuff.

Like lambs to the slaughter. :)

If you really like it (and you think it fits the challenge), f*ck it, submit it. I think its a little easier to submit an abstract photo to Transparency than it would be to submit it to City Life.

Whew! So glad to know my abstract won't be alone up there. My score will suffer tremendously I'm sure, but oh well... such is life. I'm pleased with it, anyway. :)

Looks like this will be a very abstract challenge. I'll submit one, too :-)
It's my backup photo I did earlier this week. I had a certain photo in mind with a CD (which are transparent!!) a lots of light but I wasn't able to photograph it the way it was in my mind ;-)
As for technically sound... I think it's not even that so I'm prepared for a very low score. I just didn't had the guts to skip this challenge. This would mean one week without THE THRILL ;-)

Good luck you guys and more power to ya!

My experence with an abstract/distorted image, my first submition to this site, "Split Image in the People challenge, was my lowest average so far. It did get some of the most encouraging comments, I have ever recieved on this photograph, though.

I really believe that a majority of the photos in this challenge will be abstract in some way. The concept of 'transparent' really lends itself well to an abstract photo. A transparent object will usually create some amount of distortion, if not a lot, to your subject. There are endless possibilities with this one... In my outtakes link below, I have entered my only 'transparent' outtake for this week. I spent a lot of time trying to get this image right and then dumped it for another completely different idea...

John, you have awesome ideas, per usual! Can't wait to see what you submitted!
