Canon 50mm 1.4 or sigma 50mm EX 1.4?
Am in the market for a portrait lens to stick on my 40d.
Cant see very much on here about the sigma even though the reviews i read say it out performs
all of the other 1.4's on the market.
I know the Sigma is massive and unwieldy, i just cant help thinking its rounded aperture plates
will delivery some uber smooth bokeh!
Anyone tried one of these out? |

the sigma's great... when it focuses, which isn't all the time. Not even close to all the time.
If they got the focus right it'd be great.
I have the canon 1.4 and have never had a problem with focus or sharpness and it's one of my fave lenses, especially for the price. |

i was in your same position before i bought my canon 1.4 and ive never regretted it. its really a fantastic lens. tack sharp, fairly sturdy feel ( i dont have any L glass to compare to), very light/compact, good bokeh ( though i always wonder why canon put circular blades on the 10-22 efs and not this lens seems ironic to me). i didnt get the sigma because i worried about the focusing issues. once again i have never wished this lens was sharper b/c thats one of its strong points. also if im not mistaken in the last two years its price has increased nearly 75 bucks (canons response to popular demand?). |

no its not response to popular demand but material prices have increased, as have labor prices, so the price on all their lenses has gone up.
The 70-200 2.8 IS is now something like $1800, compared to $1600 2 years ago.
Moral of the story: buy now, save later ;) |
