I'm thinking of getting a new camera. I've been looking at the stats for the Sony 717, the CoolPix 5700 and the Dimange 7Hi. Each has some really nice features, but none has exactly what I want. So far I'm leaning towards the Dimage 7hi. I like the focus ring on the lense instead of trying to focus with buttons. I also like the manual zoom on the lense. What I don't like is the fact that for macro shots the minimum distance is about 8". I also don't like the amount of noise that is there, even on ISO 100 shots. It also uses AA batteries, which is a plus for me. I do like the 7x zoom though.

The Sony costs less, has the manual focus on the lense, a 5x zoom (acceptable) but has a longer lag time before you can take a new picture. It is also limited to 128mb of ram at this time and uses an expensive battery pack. But the sony has a great lense with outstanding macro abilities.

The Nikon 5700 has the "push button" manual focus. It's pretty fast on the focus and shooting though. The zoom is pretty good and macro works down to 4". The noise level is somewhere between the Sony and the Dimage. Probably closer to the Sony than the Dimage.

Right now I am leaning towards the Dimage, but I'm having a hard time making up my mind. What I want is a combination of all three.

Any thoughts?

I think the sony has a manual twist focus/zoom lens too (as well as buttons)

sony!!! the sony rocks. it has nightvision!!! you can get battery packs off the net (ebay) for cheap. i actually like them better than AA's. and i have like 20 NIMh aa's that i dont use now (from old cameras). sony will probably up the memory stick soon.

sony as a 2.0-2.4 lens...

when i bought my sony i was told that the memory sticks have a potential 2Gb storage capability...and yet it's been over a year and no change. i'd go for the F717 just because i already have the batteries and the sticks. the general consensus is that the sony has a better image quality but less features. what are you wanting to do? if it's action photography i wouldn't go sony. if it's still life, the sony may be the way to go.

personally i think i'm gonna save the money and go canon D60.

yeah. since this will be my second time buying a camera, i'm going to go for compatability. i already have a 128mb smartmedia card. i'd like it to be useable in whatever new camera i get. i'm also trying to spend under 400 or so.

so the 717 is more or less out of the question. i mean, maybe if i make loads of cash next semester working, but i doubt it. also, the one i'm looking at (fuji f601z) goes higher in the iso department (which strangely is a must for me...) and takes the smartmedia cards i already have. the true manual focus with the ring would be nice, but you can't win 'em all, and i'd prolly use it for both day-to-day snap shots and actual photographic art.
