Quick question. Trying HDR and wanted to ask this question even though it's besides the point. When I import raw's into Lightroom, it gives them settings under develop. Color balance and such of course, makes sense. But it also gives them +50 Brightness, +25 Contrast(both settings I seldom use). It gives them automatic sharpening at 25. Blacks at 5. Point Curve at Medium in the curves dialog and noise reduction at 25 under color.

Are these auto settings that come automatically from Raw's or is something Lightroom automatically assigns as some kind of default? With HDR I just take the files directly from the folder anyways, so no big difference but I'm curious if the RAW's always have the settings above or if it's Lightroom that decides to give them these settings on its own.

Each program has its own way of dealing with how it assigns defaults to RAW files...

The default develop settings you are describing are just that -- the default develop settings.

Those are the same settings you will revert an image to if, in the develop module, you select the "reset" button at the bottom right of the right-hand panel. If you have not customized your defaults, you can revert to the same settings by holding down shift, and pressing the same button (when you press shift, you'll see it changes to "Reset (Adobe)"). Those are, for lack of a better description, the default Adobe development settings.

If you want to change the defaults and save your own default settings, press the alt key (not sure of Mac key name), and the same button will turn into "Set Default...". Select Set Default and follow the dialogs to save your settings.

You can have different settings saved based on camera serial numbers, as well as ISO.

Now, when you import a new image, or press the "Reset" button, your saved development settings will be applied (depending on how you saved them, and may be based on camera serial # and individual image ISO).

You can always go back to the Adobe defaults at any time by pressing shift + "Reset (Adobe)".

As an aside, these are completely unrelated to the develop presets you can also save.

Clear as mud? :P

ETA - The behavior determining how saved defaults are applied per camera serial # and/or image ISO is controlled under File -> Preferences -> Presets -> Default Develop Settings.
