After submitting stock photos to SXC for a while, I'd like to get into more professional work and earn some money on the side with stock photography (I'm a college student). Unfortunately, I don't know if I have the experience yet to do so.

I am submitting the following 10 photos to Shutterstock for review. In order to be accepted, no more than 7 may be rejected (3 must be accepted). Could you give me some feedback on these photos, especially whether or not you think they would be accepted?

If my work isn't up to par for Shutterstock, are there any less competitive sites where I might be accepted?

1. Computing by Night

2. On the Farm

3. Summer Rose

4. My Friend

5. Pick-up Truck (did I do a good enough job removing the logo?)

6. Bullet Train

7. Infirmary (film scan)

8. Me, Myself, and I (Are the logos and icons on the computer blurred out enough?)

9. Oil at Sunrise

10. Shreveport Skyscraper

If you think any of these would be rejected, why? What can I do to improve? Any feedback is strongly. appreciated.

You might have a tough time getting in with those images. None of them really scream a good concept. They are all OK images of things but don't really have any extra punch. If you don't have other images ready it doesn't hurt to try though.

You can also try submitting to Dreamstime and Fotolia. They don't have an application process so you can just start submitting right away. I would try submitting there for a few months then pick a few of the best sellers to apply at Shutterstock.

I agree that it wont hurt to try but I personally don't think those images have enough pizzaz to be accepted. I don't do stock though so take my advice with a grain of salt. I do think you did a fine job with removing the truck logo and blurring the computer screen although in the future I'd take the shot with just words on the screen nothing at all recognizable(like the cupcakes on your screen). also I assume your finished files are really much larger so i'm not sure wha the logo looks like at full size. You're the best judge of that. You could stand to learn a little more about porttrait ligthing judging by the shot of your friend. With the light right that shot would be much more appealing. She's a cute girl but you just didn't show her in the best light(no pun intended).

Uh...hate to ask this, but did you just join DPC to get stock photo advice? Your posting and start date are the same.

I agree with the previous two commenters. Why not enter some challenges and see where your photography style would lie against some excellent photographers. Many of whom are entering stock photos as well.

I think one and nine are the only ones that might be accepted, provided noise is non-existent and images are in focus at 100% crop. The farm is boring, the rose is too common (and past optimal bloom), your friend looks like she has giant braids coming out of her back and the light on her legs is not flattering to them. The truck is mostly eclipsed by the grass, the train is boring, there's no stock value to the infirmary sign or to the image of you, and the skyscraper is boring. Harsh, I know, but I've been doing stock for five years and the market is over-saturated with people who think they can take a picture of anything and sell it. If this selection of images is the best you have to work with, keep shooting. Before you take a picture, consider what a buyer might use it for. If you can't think of four or five hot ideas to go with the image, it's not worth taking for stock.

I would expect most to be rejected: "no commercial value". 4 and 8 are definitely useless.
