Yeah, yeah....I know....I am asking advice on a P&S camera....for a friend.....I don't touch those things....!!!

He wants a P&S camera...roughly about 10mp and as he is ageing...an LCD screen that swivels to the front for ease of use. So which camera would you recommend for him...and not too pricey!!!

Thanks in advance!

Err bump...come on guys...I could really use your help here...I know that I can just ring up a store on the coast...but they will only tell me sales talk..I would like to know what is good and bad for this guy.

Whatever he decides to go with will have to be couriered, in so he won't be able to try it out first.

it is really difficult to advice anything. Because when you say point and shoot, only thing that comes to mind is that it got to be small. But then you add swivel lcd in list that makes difficult to suggest.
if he does not mind lugging around big camera, then there are some prosumer cams with swiwel lcd i guess those could be suggested.

No, he is an elderly man....he rides horses so something he can just keep in his pocket...not to expensive...really just for snapshots. And because his eyesight is poorly he needs live view and the swivel mode makes it easier as he often takes photos of wildlife around his property.....when he reaches up high, he can't see the back of the camera.

The only cam that i could think is (not really point and shoot but will be good buy), is panasonic's G1. Which i think has a swiwel lcd and is small and could be pocket-able with small pancake (17mm f1.7). But then the issue is cost of panasonic might be too much.

Edited to correct: Lense could be 20mm f1.7 not 17mm as i wrote.

Maybe something in the Canon line. $400US though.
Canon SX20 IS
or this Nikon, also $400US.
Nikon P90

Wow Judi...that's a more challenging search effort than I thought it would be. Not many P&S cameras with "swiveling" or "vari-angle" LCD's that aren't mega-expensive or larger than average in size (need a BIG pocket).

My wife uses an older Canon that has a nice swivel LCD (Canon PowerShot A620). It's not too large (still not that pocket friendly because of the AA batteries). Maybe you could find a good used one? Here's a link to it (Canon A620).

Other than that, the Canon SX20 (mentioned earlier by others) looks like the best alternative.

Good luck!

Canon has had some pocketable but largish compacts with swivel screen. The previously mentioned A620 is probably a good match, though not 10 Mp. Does he really need 10Mp?

It doesn't have to be 10mp but something that will last him for quite a few years...so a 5 or 6mp just won't cut it.

Olympus E-P1?

The new Canon G11 is about as fully featured as one could want, room to grow with it, and it now has the swivelling LCD.

It has a price tag that may be too high for your friend, though. But I have had both the G9 and G10, and every friend who has seen and got their hands on them has gone right out and bought one for themselves. I doubt your friend would regret the purchase, once they got over the sticker shock :-)

The G11 has a better sensor, will accept hot shoe flashes (but has an onboard flash) does face recognition, video, full manual with RAW if desired, etc etc.

The biggest risk I see if your friend gets one? You will touch it and have to have one of your very own! :-) With a nice black leather case. I know you like black leather... ;~)

It doen't have the flip screen but for extended capabilities in other directions you might look into Canon's latest waterproof (10-meter) camera -- I think it's in the mid-$300 USD range ...

Yea, the Canon D10 is pretty jazzy from what I can tell.

That's probably a good thing for him too....!!

Thank you so much everyone for all the info so far. It is so damn difficult to purchase anything without being able to see it first.

Why not? Five or Six megapixels is more than adequate for most purposes now, and it will be in a few years as well. I think the swivel screen is a much more important factor here. The Canon Powershot models mentioned are a great choice in that regard.

Because he has a habit of taking a photo of a bird or bat in the tree and then cropping in....drastically!!!!!!

I owned a Canon A650 IS until it was lost recently. Very good quality for a P&S and had a swivel screen and was 12 MP. As far as I know there are no truly pocket able P&S cameras out there that have a swivel screen. The A650 IS was small and light but was fairly bulky to put in your pocket. The mentioned SX10 & 20 cameras are even more bulky.

I now own the Canon D10, the water and shock proof camera. So far I like it but it to is a bit more than pocket able.
