Ok, here's the deal. I've been spoiled rotten by my 1DmkII in terms of sheer tank like refusal to quit, 8 fps, 100% finder, fast AF and instant response. However, I'm thinking about an upgrade/backup and I've really wanted a full frame camera for some time. The 1Ds is pretty much out of my price range and I'm not switching to Nikon.

Soooo...does anyone have a mkII or mkIII 1 series camera AND a 5D mkII? What are your biggest gripes about the 5D? Biggest likes? Any difficulty navigating the menus on the 5D after using the 1D? Any other worthwhile tidbits you'd care to share?

Thanks.

I have had experience with both - one thing you wont miss is the double button pressing thingy on the 1Dmk2 series - ghastly practice. Also the lower noise of the 5Dmk2 will blow you away, the 1dmk2 is pretty bad when it comes to noise at high iso values. However the build quality/focusing/weatherproofing are far below the 1Dmk2 which, as you say, is built like a Sherman. The menu system on the 5D is the same as the 1Dmk3 which is great, especially the favourites menu.
I would say moving from the 1dmk2 to the 5Dmk2 could easily be seen as upgrading your current camera, although with some reservations.

I think I'd go for the 1D mark III instead. I realize it's a $1000 more and no FF but but your giving up alot of great 1D-series features to get a budget FF. 3.9 FPS is slowwwww and 9-point AF is nothing to brag about compared to 45. Maybe wait a few months and see if Canon has something in mind for 1D Mark III upgrade. It's going on 3 years soon since it's was released. It's due for something I'd think.

True, but I'd still have my 1dmkII for those times when I need it.

Take a look at sample images with imaging-resource's comparometer. The 1D Mark II isn't listed, but you can compare against the newer Mark III. The 5D Mark II doesn't offer 8fps, a 100% finder or fast AF, but it sure delivers on image quality! For that matter, even the 7D produces respectably low noise, and it DOES have those feature you've appreciated... albeit with a crop sensor.

I think in your position I would want to check out the new 7D - it has most (maybe all) the functionality of your 1DmkII but at the size and weight of the 5D II - sounds pretty appealing to me.

Or just go and get the 1D mkIII - quicker, lighter and prices are dropping while the world waits for it's replacement.

The 1dmkII is listed if you select All Cameras

I should have also listed that part of the appeal of a FF camera is in the elimination of the "crop factor" since I love shooting with wide lenses. Adding to this is the fact that since the day I bought it, I've been dying to shoot on a FF camera with my Sigma 12-24 at 12mm. That, in and of itself isn't enough justification for a $3k camera purchase, but it is a consideration for me and, yes, it's considerably wider than a 10mm EF-S lens on an APS-C camera.

I haven't plunked down any cash yet, but you've given me a few other points to consider before I do. Thanks for your input everyone.

Ah so it is, but it's a different setup that reduces the value of a 1:1 comparison, and some of the larger images are missing. Still, you should be able to see the IQ difference on a 5D Mark II. Given all the new technologies showcased in the "lesser" 7D, it wouldn't surprise me to see a quick update to the 5D II and 1 series coming soon.

7D will be my next body I do believe. I like the 100% viewfinder, the 19 point AF and the 8 FPS. The weather sealing is better than the 5D and the dual processors leave lots of room for improvement on future upgrades. i just they would've settled for APS-H insteadof C

I'm selling my eos-1d mark iii to get the 5d mark ii. I'm shooting more weddings than I am sports these days. I need the full frame and noise control. Anyone wanna buy a 1D Mark III? $2800
