If this is Canon's answer to the D700 they sure missed the boat. Crop body? Holy crap! Man what a disappointment. Edit to add, they should have put a 0 behind the 7 since its a crop body.

I was thinking the same thing;-) The only interesting aspects of this camera is the integrated speedlite transmitter and larger viewfinder, other than that I'm not too impressed. No matter, I'm in no market for a camera anytime soon.

I'd say the 50D should have been the called the 40D+, and this is what the 50D should have been. At least the AF system looks interesting.

From what the article said, it seems this isn't intended to compete with the D700, but rather the D300 line of cameras... and as a significant step up from the 50D. I'd expect that many of these features will make it into the next gen of the 5D cameras

I'll give you guys a good reason why this should have been called something else.

' . substr('//www.sweetsweetmangos.com/i//7D_Dried_Mango_Products_sml.JPG', strrpos('//www.sweetsweetmangos.com/i//7D_Dried_Mango_Products_sml.JPG', '/') + 1) . '

LOL!!! It's Mangoes since it's not entirely a lemon. ;)

It's a shame the 5D Mark III is probably a ways off... I want a FF version of the 7D. Oh well... I will probably order a 7D anyway.

this seems like a great upgrade from a 40d/50d but I really wish Canon would make something to actually battle the D700 and bring out a 15mp, 7fps full-frame thing.

Still, there are some very nice features on the 7d incl the option to shift exposure beyond +/-2. I didn't see any information about increased bracketing size but hopefully they've beefed up the 3 shot bracketing to 5.

And speedlite control? Wow, they finally caught up!

I was going to get the 5d2 and probably still will since I doubt any more FF canon's are on their way soon :(

I understand 3D specs for watching 3D movies or looking at 3D pictures.... but I can't fathom what dimensions 7D specs are used for looking at/around/through/beyond... ;-Þ

Not sure about the naysayers but the tech specs of this camera are pretty awesome. It bodes well for the future of the 1D series. Nice to see they have taken the load of focussing off the processors and handed it over to its own unit, can`t wait to see how this works in real-world situations.

Lots of other goodies in there to chew on as well. fantastic.

I think the dual-processors lay the foundation for this to be a reality on a future release.

I'm considering ordering one since I got my job back. I was also considering a used 1D Mark III. I'm interested in FPS and 8 isn't to shabby. I would've rather seen a 1.3 crop but oh well.

ETA: anybody seen an availability date yet anywhere?

Yeah - Catch up JUST to Nikon for sure and certainly not a leap... but it looks good from the 50D specs. FF would have been nice but it would have killed their higher product lines. The biggest thing for me is FINALLY FINALLY the catchup on having the pop-up control remote flashes... That would be the biggest benefit for me. The full viewfinder is also nice but see if they managed to get rid of the tunnel issue on the existing crop bodies.

I am very tempted at that price point and feature set... Will see in a few months when it's generally available and some people get to use it in real life....

EDIT: Looks like there is a 15-85 IS (efs) lens... that might be interesting if your going to stick with the 1.6 crop....

At 3.5 - 5.6? Seems a bit shoddy if you ask me. But I guess they know their market.

I don't get it... I think they may be a cry for help. What they REALLY wanted to say was "help, we need a new initiative and design team"

The 17-85mm was f/4-5.6, and it was still quite good. I scored an 8.19 with that lens.

Good write up => robgalbraith.com

All this configuration goodness is marred by the fact that mirror lockup remains buried in a Custom Function menu, the same as previous Canon digital SLRs with this feature

:-(( Seriously??... Not like that is an unknown scream wish list from a lot of people

The problem with Canon is that they have an idiotic marketing team that forces their enrgineers to design ridiculous sensors with 47 bajillion MP. I guess its easier to market/sell an 18MP sensor than a 12MP "Lord of Darkness" sensor with the same new tech as the 18MP one.

It's worth noting from Galbraith's examples, that 7D noise at ISO6400 is actually comparable to the 5D Mark II. Sure, I would have preferred 12MP for even better quality and frame rate, but that's still pretty impressive.

Isn't the 7D supposed to compete with the D300/D300s?

Canon's policy has always been that single digit cameras, IE 1 series and 5D have been the "professional" line of cameras and the XXD and XX series have been there consumer line. To put a crop body in that designation to me is just silly.

What? It takes Canon two years to catch up? 100% viewfinder? I am glad I went with the two year old Nikon. I just wish all makers would make a DSLR as it should be...no movie mode. If I want a camcorder I will buy one designed for the job, I want a DSLR to be what it should be, a stills camera with the best spec possible. We had bridge cameras from P&S to DSLR, now we get bridge from DSLR to Camcorder.

So the crop-sensor 1D is "silly"? Tell that to the sports shooters. At last, Canon has a crop-sensor body with weather sealing that doesn't cost an arm and a leg...

LOL, which means nothing in the real world...
