How many bad pictures of nail biting, nose picking and smoking do I have to look at? There are too many of the same pictures. How do you take a nice picture of a toilet lid? Answer: You don't!

In other words, open challenges bring out bad photographers?

You don't have to look at any of them.

I admit that I chose a bad habit to depict - but the challenge was habits and though I wouldn't call many of them pretty photos, I'd say that many that people are complaining about are well done.

You can get a nice picture of a toilet lid, but they probably didn't know how, or couldn't get a nice picture of one. (Not that I'm saying I can.)

*shrugs* We didn't know what other people were going to do, I'm afraid that mine is getting pounded for the fact that it isn't "original."

That makes me mad. All our ideas were original at the time, it just doesn't seem like it now because they are all right there together. Even though we didn't know what other people were going to do (yes we could guess, but who would guess that there would be so many?).

You submitted a fire and ice photo for opposites, so I really don't think you should be saying anything about this.

Haha, you'd get a heap of comments saying "Yuk! Why is she eating cheese?" :-)

Voting is difficult without actually seeing the entries first.

We had the "let's spend 30 seconds on each photo before voting" thread, then "at least for 5 seconds". Now, we're being encouraged to vote without seeing them at all. : )

I thought I was the only one with a nude chick eating cheese habit. It's getting out of control. I might need to go to NCECA (nude chick eating cheese anonymous)

I wish people around here weren't so negative about this challenge, just because there are, hypothetically (since I haven't counted), 10 pictures of nail biting or nose picking. Since they are all depicting the same thing, does that blanketly make each of them a bad picture? One bad apple spoils the whole bunch, I guess. Everyone needs to take a happy pill or something and wake up on the RIGHT side of the bed tomorrow. :o)

edited for clarity

how many times has this been said? It only shows that our mothers and fathers did a good job on conditioning us that we think bad habits are - indeed - BAD habits and we disgust them :D

I chose to express a bad habit though, but maybe there are a lot of people who can't stand to be confronted with their own "dark sites" because my photo isn't doing well, but the comments say it should score high (I only had a handful of comments so that doesn't say anything...I know...)

oh well..I had a great time making this picture (can you imagine: exposing a bad habit with a good excuse this time!!)

I dont think the problem is necessarily with the photographs submitted but rather the choice of challenge topics. Whereas you can get, and there are, good photographs on the theme choice, the majority of them are depicting bad habits that are not particularly photogenic subjects. Had the challenge theme been 'flowers' or more a 'favorable' theme then their would have been a larger batch of 'good' photos. If you look at the challenge history page you'll see the higher scores tend to go to images in challenges that are more 'simplistic' or straightforward.

Open challenges are more likely to be where new users to the website enter first before becoming members. I'm not saying that all users are less experienced, but certainly statistically speaking that is the case. When there is a lot of weight put to meeting the challenge I can imagine people being so keen to meet the challenge that perhaps they dont take into account if the image is also 'pretty' enough to enter into a contest.

actually i've enjoyed alot of the habit picks, I really enjoy seeing people in pictures (esp. front on) and although some macro shots are nice(always seems to be alot of em with inanimate objects or insects), I really think shooting people is "where it's at" :) I've really laughed out loud while judging some of these. granted i've given alot of 2s and 3s, but I'm having a good time wondering what the response was from some of the models when asked the first time if they'd stick their finger up their nose and pose...good times my friends good times...

I had a great idea for a good habit. Couldn't schedule a good time with my model. NOt that it would've turned out well, but it was not depicted at ALL on this challenge. Should've found a different model...lol

I admit I was getting a bit bored with the nail biting, nose picking, etc. But, taking a step back, there were definitely one or two which *were* done artistically, and with good technical composition (well, by my standards anyway!). That made them stand out even more from the images which were quick depictions of a cliche habit.

I think the key with the open challenges is to try to find the below-average pictures which exhibit potential and help that person to find their next stepping stone through comments. It's especially easy to vote an open challenge so harshly the person feels rejected from the community rather than drawn into it. It takes some time build up an immunity to critique, and an appreciation for the terseness that may come with commenting on large numbers of (potentially similar) shots.

Good comments. Everyone made me think a bit more about how I judge photos. Thanks!

I know it is not a picture of the lid, but this is a very interesting and nice image of a toilet.

And a large batch of dull, middle of the road Hallmark style "pretty" pictures.

I am new to this - returning to photography after years away -- actually just years not sharing my work... it is all about the comments I find myself working harder on the content and technical aspects of the challenges, and have decided after two entries to sign up as a member so I can participate more in member challenges as well.

Keep the comments coming, and sorry I choe nail biting as my habit, but I couldn't find a nun in time.

Of course all the entries with four or more images that share a common subject should be rated as a three or less, they are gross and show no originality.

Shots like this toilet are so bad that even though some people would call it one of the most important shots of modernist photography ( taken in 1925 by some guy named Edward Weston so its not even done with a digital camera ) I would never give it above a three cause there are so many toilet shots in this challenge.

I love this shot! Although it's a picture of a toilet bowl, it's a very interesting picture of a toilet bowl. I would give this a 10.

I would disagree with your statement, if this was true your picture depicting fire and ice in the opposites challenge, which I gave high marks would have rated very low. Artistically and technically well done, a common chosen theme picture can still be rated high in my book.

absolutely, you don't! feel free to rate them accordingly... just because these pictures met the challenge doesn't mean that they have any value... this is a photography site.
