I just picked up a Powershot A530 at a pawn shop for $30 this afternoon. Just something cheap to keep in the car all the time. I know a lot of others have a small camera like this, so that they always have a camera at hand. I was wondering if there was any interest in a P&S side challenge for next month. Lets show what can be done with these cheap and underrated pocket cameras.

The pointers and shooters so far:
MelonMusketeer using a Fuji A920
glad2badad using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35
bvy with an Olympus C-70 and/or Sigma DP1
Yo_Spiff armed with a Powershot A530 & T-Mobile G1
Covert_Oddity using a Sony DSC-H10
bvlindalou with a steal of a deal yard sale find on a Fuju Finepix A360
pixelpig using an Iphone
karmat with a Sony DSC-S30 (or DSC-W30)
pedrobop wielding a Canon Powershot SX-100 IS
Love with a Samsung S850
GeneralE marches onto the field with an Olympus D490Z and Canon A80
Bugzeyeand a Nokia 2630 phone-cam are in the game now
Lutchenko is begging his daughter to borrow her Fuji Zf5d
The_Tourist will be seeing the sights with a Casio Exilim EX-V8SR and IPhone
Keriboi using a powershot g10 (Brian, feel free to use that Sigma DP-1 if you like)
Zeuszen is in with a Leica D-Lux 4
undieyatch brings another phone-cam to the party
cpanaioti and a Powershot G3 help to swell the ranks of the Canon users.
albc28 and another one of those Iphone thingies.
DCNUTTER brings along one of my own faves, the Powershot S5 IS
pwm6 is in, wielding a Sony DSC-W300
haze is dusting off her Sony DSC-S650
Joker1114 is in with a Kodak Z760
Germaine is in with a Powershot G10 and one of those I-cams that also make phone calls.
Starbanana slips in with a Sony DSC-W50
totaldis jumps into the fray with a Blackberry Storm phone-cam
scooter97 scoots in with a Powershot SX110 IS
GinaRothfels with a Pentax Optio W10
tnun is in with a Nikon Coolpix L10
idnic says she is going to kick our butts with a Nikon Coolpix L20

I like this. I will be able to shoot and post a couple a week, and make a few comments as it goes along. I will be splitting the time between this one and the wildlife SC.
I use an older Fuji A920. I don't think it's even on the camera list here at DPC. It does macro almost as good as the heavy artillery when conditions are right.

I'll play. I just picked up one of these (Lumix DMC-FZ35) today (should be delivered on Thursday). :-)

I should have figured someone would up the specs! Since it's a side challenge, you can use whatever you like, though my own intention was to use a garden variety consumer compact. I'm not even using the S5 for this. I have a Powershot A530, Coolpix L6 and my phone-cam. Considering your top 5 are all done with a P&S, I think you've already proven the point of this exercise!

Oops! Sorry. How about if I pull out the old Olympus P&S again? I think it's in my son's bedroom somewhere. Or are you saying I'm overqualified?

I had one of those and liked it a lot. I gave it to my niece when I got the A820 to replace it. You got a bargain. Make sure that the lens is clean. A lot of the P&S's get trashed because the lens gets dirty and it makes the pix look bad. I clean my P&S lens with a q tip barely dampened with alcohol.

Steal of a deal, there! I picked up a nearly new Powershot A530 at a pawn shop for $30. I thought that was a good deal, but a dollar? Wow.

As is the custom, I'll start the posting thread with the new month.

Where are you drawing the line on the cameras used? I don't think my cellphone camera could cut it and I am going to guess that my G-10 is a bit over the top for this.

It's really up to you, though my original intention was for us to show what can be done with the kind of inexpensive camera that my mom would buy. I'll probably do a couple with my phone cam as well.

I bet with the Olympus D490Z and Canon A80 I have two of the oldest cameras still in use here ... though the Canon has capabilities beyond strictly P&S ... :-)

I will see what I can do with my phone once. Haven't really played with the camera feature much other than to send video messages to my wife.

I would like to play along too. Is any camera that isn't a DSLR a point and shoot, or does it need to be shaped like a cigarette packet?

lol, I don't think shape matters. Just a basic no bells and whistles camera.
