Well, it is better by far than I can do but in a challenge with advanced editing rules was it illegal to edit out the "stray" fibers? Really, they should have been manually clipped away before the shot was taken. I mean no disrespect to VitaminB. Like I said, It's better than I could do. I just wonder how the voters could overlook this and be so picky about other things. I suppose nobody else feels it proper to say anything bad about a ribbon winner.

I think the stray fibers came off to you differently than to others. I perceived this as sparks shooting about inside the ribbon, and to me, the strays added to the effect.

And I have left critiques on ribbon winners, but usually in challenge. You are right, that many of us feel uncomfortable critiquing something that the mass vote says is awesome. Really, though, there is nothing wrong with it. Your opinion is still a valid one.

By "fibers" I assume that you mean "sparks" and I'm failing to see which ones were edited out. It's clear that some of them were lessened due to PP, but I don't thing that any were removed.

However, even if they were, I am unable to find a rule in Advanced Editing that would preclude removing some of the sparks. Care to elaborate?

Well, I find nothing in the pic or title to indicate sparks. Looks like a bunch of haphazard stray fibers to me. I guess that's why I don't do well in the challenges.
How was one to know they were sparks? Sharp crisp shots are what used to be the winners here. I guess things have changed.

Did you even look at his original (posted in his notes)?

Yes I did, AFTER the voting. When did you look?

You also posted this thread after voting / after you saw the original, so I was just surprised you are saying you didn't know they were sparks. So I guess you are saying you didn't know it then, but you do now and I am not seeing your point about "fibers".

To me, the brighter spot at about the 4'clock position in the circle portion of the ribbon primarily what cued me to the fact that they were sparks.

This picture makes me really excited to start playing with sparklers...it is a really cool effect!

Not to speak for David, but I think his point is that during voting, he didn't see anything to indicate that they were sparks...therefore he wants to know why it received such a high overall score since they could've been stray fibers. But as I said above, I noticed that they were in fact sparks during the voting process (although I wasn't able to vote).

That's right. I didn't know until after the voting and I would think very few of the voters knew either. After being able to read the notes it is clear they are sparks. Everybody know that, boy. At voting time, they looked like a bunch of dang fibers that had not been removed and made for a photo lacking crispness. You can also see by the photogs comments that they also would have removed them but SC advised them not to.....so, I guess it was illegal to edit them out.

I guessed they were sparks and, for me, the strays added to the dynamic of the shot. The blue was so electrifying that it just couldn't be contained within the boundaries of a mere ribbon!
08/24/2009 10:33:41 PM · #14
Actually, I thought it was fibers, as well--but I really liked that there were stray ones coming out. Sparks or fibers, I think the photo would have been significantly less interesting without them.

I see. Well, I would've given it a 5. I don't see how it finished as high as it did either, but DPC voters are like women - no sense trying to make any sense out of 'em. oops, was that out loud?

If anything, they gave the viewer a hint as to how the image was created.

I know that you men have problems figuring things out -- DPC, women, 2+2, but keep trying, someday the brain might start working. :P

Yeah, it would be illegal to edit ALL of them out [rule: you may not use ANY editing tool to move, remove or duplicate any element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer’s description of the photograph (aside from color or crop)...] but then what would be the point of the sparkler? But by "stray" fibers, I assumed that you meant the couple that "spilled over" out of the ribbon, which as I read it, would be legal to remove (rule: You may clone out incidental power lines, twigs, dust specks, stray hairs, and similar minor imperfections within any capture used).

A man walks into a store that sells brains. One brain was labelled "man's brain $3000" another was labelled "woman's brain $50. The man asks the salesperson, "why such a large difference in price"

The sales person responds, "Because the woman's brain has been used"

hahahhahahahahahahah!

I think you rule guys are missing something .. "some burning of errant sparks to emphasize the shapes of the ribbon". aka turning them darker blending into the background. Dodging is of course legal in advanced.

And I definitely thought the photo were light streaks, maybe not sparks but the strays were fine with me, i scored it a 6. Don't necessarily think he should have ribboned but I think you are being a little harsh. Are you the one doing all the 1 votes? Lets not get mean, i mean, you created a thread to bash a photo...

Sorry that you didnt like my photo, but thanks for the extra attention either way.

I wasnt about to make an obvious title, I didnt want it to be a photo of sparks, rather I wanted it to be a photo of a ribbon.... and while you say that you found nothing in the pic to indicate sparks, they are in fact sparks.

I am glad that voters overlooked the stray sparks. Sometimes we get far too caught up in absolute perfection here that otherwise great photos get dinged because of stray hairs, a speck of dust, or other things that are really inconsequential to the photo itself.

Regarding SC, I emailed them 2 days before the deadline asking their advice on whether or not I could edited the sparks out further using the burn tool. This is what I wanted the image to look like:

I got a reply saying that 3 of 5 SC members that had seen it thought it could be DQ'd. Considering that there are 13 SC members, I could have 'gotten away with it', but decided to play it safe.

I posted the original because people asked me how I did it.

It may have not been the "real" second best, but the average of votes determined that "democratically", so we have to accept it. Let's not be so harsh on other people's photos. We are all here for fun...

Note: I don't understand why people on here will give 1's...

Well, in defence of my photo, it was the "real" second best. That is how things are voted here. It might not be your second favourite in here, but there were 130+ voters, and taking all of them into account, I ended up in second. Doesnt happen often though, but I am glad when it does.

And, I didnt get any 1s, or 2s.

You're right. Only blurry, complex compositions get ribbons now. This place just isn't for you anymore. It's time for you to leave. But before you go, there are about 300 other voters you need to take with you...
