Hi,
I'll be in Paris between 9th and 11th September. Can I get some general and photography specific suggestions from people who've been or live there. Good spots for photography, what to look out for, maybe which area to stay at, etc. I'll be there for only 2 and a bit days so would be good to know what to expect before I get there. Actually any Paris residents willing to show me around would be great :)

Paris is one of the best walking cities there is so I might suggest staying near the center of town. The 6th arrondissement and the 1st arrondissement are centrally located and all the metro lines intersect around them. From those locations you can walk to practically any common tourist destination in less than 20-25 minutes. The Eiffel Tower and the Arc de Triomphe maybe 35-40 min. by foot depending exactly where you are or which side of the Seine you're on. But again, they're nice easy walks with plenty to see and do on the way.
So if you're at Place de Chatelet in the 1st and you walk to the Arc you will go up Rue De Rivoli past the Louvre, Le Madelaine, Le Jeu De Paume Le Jardin Des Tuilleries...up the Champs Elysee and you'll hit the Arc. You'll be flanked by a famous shopping Street called Rue St. Honore and on the right just up a bit you'll pass The Opera and a lot more.
If you walk the opposite way on Rue De Rivoli you hit the Bastille with plenty to see on the way.
For photography you can't miss. Personally I wouldn't waste my time on the tourist shots but the side streets around Sacre Coeur or an area called Le Marais could yield some cool unique stuff. And then there's the left bank around Place St. Michel...?
Here's a DPC folder with a few things I took my last stay. I lived there for 3 1/2 years and didn't have nearly the time to hit spots I would have liked to shoot.

The Isle du St. Loius is cool. It's the small island behind the bigger one that has Notre Dame. There is a bridge connecting the 2.
You'll often find street performers on the bridge. St. Loius looks like ti did 300-400 years ago. Lots of art gallaries and shops along the main street throuygh the island. There's an awesome cheese shop on the island that will vacuum seal the cheese for you so you can take it home without stinking up the airplane ;-)
I also have a great walking tour starting at the Trocadero going under the Eiffel Tower, to Napolean's Crypt, then the Rodin museum (my fave0, then over the musee D'Orsay and the Louvre, I'll try to map it out for you tonight if you're interested. It does include several of the more touristy places, but if you've never been, it's a great walk. |
